water pump question

When it comes to these 1988 to 1991 Chevy trucks you have to be real careful what the auto parts store sells you. I have a 1991 V series truck, and I cannot tell you how many times a parts store handed me a part for a C/K gen-4 truck instead of a V/R gen-3 truck.

I feel that! Trying to get parts for my R30 dually, and they kept giving me the wrong stuff!

But the water pump should be the same! Everything went serpentine by '89.

V-belt std spin has a boss cast & tapped driver side for p/s adjustment bolt slide .

Serp belt rev spin does not .

These are the 2 fastest ways to spot them apart .

But the water pump should be the same! Everything went serpentine by '89.

Actually My 1991 V3500 Crew Cab is a bit of a bastard. The 350 TBI engine came from the factory with V-belt on the Steering pump and AC. Then a ribbed belt on the Alt. Thus, my water pump is a clock wise rotation pump. I have to be real careful what water pump I buy for my truck because all the parts catalogs say what you posted is correct.

Have seen this belt set a bit, can't say year and model any more
GM did this on some car applications too in the mid to late eighties.
Changing to the benefit of the multi-grove belt which offered more surface contact for much better grip and less slippage as the belts aged.
But as usual they didn’t go all out on each belt drive accessory right off the bat - most likely the bean counters had major influence on this because changing the other accessory drives to the wider multi-groove belts would have required more real estate on each pulley in addition to new brackets for the other drives. The alt was an easy change over before the major shift to the serpentine drives and the last of the breed of squares seemed to be stuck with existing parts for the remainder of the model run.
I remember going to GM held shop seminars for mechanics and they would promote the effectiveness of the new multi-grove belts system for the alt’s and we would ask why the A/C and power steering pump didn’t get the better grip set up as well and all the rep would say is that “it’s coming soon”.

My 89 suburban and my 91 cc were that way.
I always took the parts in to confirm my purchase.

And now when you say K5, they bring up parts for a Kia :doah:
I went in the parts store and chose the oldest person work’n the parts counter in hopes of gett’n somebody with half-a-brain when I was in search of a starter bendix for a standard Chevy old school starter - well, the guy had no idea what I was talking about.
I had to show him on the exploded parts diagram what it was…
Product knowledge is a dying skill set nowadays.

That is why I go to napa.
Although in my town O'Reilly has a few good guys too.
But not autozone

Amen to that !
NAPA is my usual go to place but this particular time I used the parts store closest to us ( O’Reilly’s ) and got disappointed once again.

AUTOZONE is just absolute bottom of the barrel for hopes of any parts person that might possibly be able to think beyond what the computer prompts them to ask.
Most of them folks were flipp’n burgers or spitt’n in the food at Taco Bell before they came to work at an auto parts store and their only prior dealings with a car is that they pump their own gas!

I’m all for giving a new person on the job a lot of leeway ( we all had to start out somewhere ) but these folks ain’t got the first bit of auto knowledge - whatever happened to being familiar with the field that your job is in…

Product knowledge is no longer a requirement or even sought after anymore - companies want the cheapest employee possible that they can get away with.

Most NAPA stores seem to keep relatively real parts type folks on the counter and keep fairly good name brand suppliers on the shelf.
