Similar to a wax, except it is very slightly abrasive. You rub it on, wait for it to haze and polish it out with a soft cloth. Should be in the same aisle and shelf as wax at whatever store you buy car cleaning stuff.
if it's small areas, you could probably just get a small tub of mother's compound to save a bit... 3M's smallest are usually qrts...
also, just be aware, the more aggressive the compound you buy, the more "swirl" scratches you'll have... a duller look.... then you generally want to polish or glaze the swirls out, then wax.... one of the best polishs out is 3M finesse it.... been around forever...
ya might get em out with just a polish... finesse it and buffer, or some good old elbow grease can do wonders.. if not, ya have polish for after the compound you'll buy..
I had this issue with new trim. The clips start rusting- take the clips off and drop them in some etching primer- Can't remember the name that I used- NASON made it, and it was green- worked great and 6 years later there is no sign of rusty streaks anywhere
