Weird problem with TH400 (see post #79)

It sounds like the vac modulator as others have stated,, but I would also pull the fill plug on the transfer case and see if it is over filled...

If the seals are leaking or installed wrong between the transmission and transfer case...the trans will pump fluid into the transfer case,,,

and if your seals are leaking externally on the transfer case, that's where your fluid is going...

Me too!

That is a fairly common problem with those type transmissions. Not sure why a brand new modulator would have a bad diaphragm.

But, when you replace the modulator, be sure to squeeze the rubber hose and make sure its still firm.
The transmission fluid will be absorbed into the rubber and cause it to get flabby, swell, and fall off the modulator.

Was just gonna say this. Ive changed 2 tcase seals on 2 seperate rigs this year because of this. One was mine

Thanks for the answers guys. I had never heard of this happening before, but there's a first time for everything. I got a new vacuum modulator for about $10 and had to put about half a pint of ATF in the the trans and now hopefully I'm good to go. I'll have to make a mental note so if it ever happens again I know what to do.

Now I just need to get some degreaser to get the oil spots off the paint on the tailgate. It looks like I was parked in front of a turkey fryer or something. Automatic tranmissions...

go grab a bottle of purple power cleaner . this stuff cleans oils off ral fast and good. safe for painted surfaces also. and cleans tires real good to. i use it all the time . and i run it stright not mixed.
