I have an acquaintance on this site who I have wheeled with in the past. He currently has a 4.56 LSD front dana 60. It is at times a hinderance to his forward progress on some of the more difficult obstacles we encounter on the trails. I suggested that he should invest in a front locker. His solution is to weld the LSD. Am I wrong in suggesting that he could sell this carrier and recoup at least a good portion toward a lockright and open 4.56 carrier? I am sure he is nearly living paycheck to paycheck, but I would think he could scrape enough of the extra coin finish it.

You didn't say what type so I assume it's a Trac Lock? If so they're not that desirable plus it sounds like it needs new clutches. I'd say it's worth $75-$100, not a big money maker so he'd have to come up with another $200 or so. If things are tight, welding might be a good option.

What about finding an open carrier to weld AND sell the L/S? There would be a little bit of set up involved but not too bad.

It was recently rebuilt it is just when the front wheels are 3' up a wall and the rear sinks in a hole it unloads and spins one tire. I may have been stretching the broke part.

We go down jeep trails. I wouldn't run a welded front

one of the lunch box locker brands offers a drop in unit for the light duty track lock . this way you wont need to do major rework of the gears .

Is a lock right really that much better than the LSD where it wouldn't be worth paying $550 or so for a Detroit over a $400 lockrite?

It is a huge difference between a lsd and a locker. Marty and I both have a lock rites and so far so good. Marty has broken like 4 front axles and the locker is still kicking. I thought about going detroit on my regear but for now I am staying stock carrier.

Gotcha. I don't have any experience with one (yet, mines ready to be tested soon), so I wasn't sure on the performance.

In that case id sell whats in there and go lock right/Spartan definitely.

John is just pushing me a bit to get this done. Yes, the whole axle/LSD was rebuilt to the tune of $1,200 for parts and labor by Inland Truck about 1,000 miles ago by the PO. It does OK but a locker would definitely be to my benefit. I have no intention to weld it.

The order of clutches and steels in a Power Lock can be rearranged to make the unit considerably tighter, maybe try that with your Trac Lock.
