I know welding up a 10 bolt won't last long but I want to go on some deep snow runs which requires lockers for the next month or so until I get my eight lug (dana 44 and 14 bolt) axles in. Question is the front has auto hubs, hows the welded carrier going to effect them?

i wouldn't trust auto hubs, Id get some warn premium hubs for the 10 bolt, and later down the road, they will swap directly to the 44 8lug front. Ive seen my buddy pay to get his truck out of the snow because we had auto hubs and they failed. id even trust the cheap plastic warn hubs before the autos from the factory. Plus, if you need to make a u-turn on pavement, the auto hubs will stay locked and with a welded front, that can be a pita.

Def get some manual hubs. Hell If I get all my **** done this weekend i may have a set I'll give ya for 10 bucks if that. PM me on sunday..:doah:

also since you didnt mention if the truck will be trailered or not...

welded on the street in the front!?!?!?!?!?!?!

dont think your forearms will like that :haha:

OK, more information. Yes it's street driven but no plans to use 4x4 on street at this time of year. But with second deepest snowfall on record just about all wheeling will be deep snow for awhile.

I have driven welded front before and have big arms. Just wondering if the hubs are going to unlock once spiders are welded.

That's a great offer thank you. But if my 44 hubs will fit I can do that. Have to look at them when Allan (Moutainexplorer) brings them over.

DONT EVEN TRY. The spider gears will snap right in half in a matter of minutes.

mine lasted less than 20 minutes in the dirt and they were in pieces, Just get a lock rite and install that.

dont think you understand what I mean...

you can put your transfercase in 2wd.... however your front is still locked.. and the rear axle will have to push the front into a turn... trust me...not good..

I have no experience with these auto hubs. I thought they would unlock, same as unlocking hubs.

Either way I'm just going to leave it alone and wait for my real axles. :D

root, correct me if Im wrong, but I thought the auto hub only engaged if it sensed power from the transfer case. Theoretically, I could see it working.

Practically, I wouldnt trust it. I'd do it with manual hubs though.

I mean this in the nices way possible...
The first corner you take in a welded 10 bolt on pavement will be the last...

Dont waste your time...

On a side note, I'd swap to manual hubs...

Red, Im not disagreeing with you, but, uhh.. why would be turning corners on pavement with the front hubs locked? :) Just a silly question. :)

Didnt you say you were welding both front and back?

It'll make a few more than one turn off road...
Are these ones that are failing do to maybe the welding? I've wheeled welded rigs before for a long time with no issues. But they were Dana 44 and 60. Or is it the axle parts itself breaking? Or could it be driving style? (Hold my beer and watch this!) Or could it be 40 inch tires instead of 33-35?

I welded the spiders on my 10b and went out to play for a half an hour. Not even anything challenging. I did get on it climbing a soft hill a few times but that was it and I was running 33's. I came back and opened up the diff cover cuz I did not like it welded and found the spider gears in 2 pieces sitting in the bottom of the diff. It is just not a strong enough diff to handle it. IMHO.

The auto hubs wont be stong enought to handle that.
I think they will go way befeore anything else.
Now if you put on manual hubs that will transmit a lot more torgue to the internals.
I would go with a lunchbox locker and manual hubs for the snow.
