It seems to me that the auto hubs would work whether the diff was welded or not.
You would just have to back up in 2HI to unlock them before driving on the street. Once both hubs are unlocked, there is nothing to make them re-engage until the transfer case is shifted again. The auto hubs DO have problems sometimes and once one of them hung up on the disengage, it would turn the diff, which would turn the other axleshaft and engage the other hub, making it all locked again.
But I think it would work for a while.
