Well, Big Ugly's officially a project and not a vehicle

Hopefully tomorrow.

Dirty hands + a camera that is technically the wife's = I try not to keep it in the garage while I work on things.
(Even though 99% of the pictures it's ever taken are of my/our 4x4's)

i know what you mean....... they started putting my ROs in plastic bags lol i tend to get things dirty while im working

Got the new wheels. Practically new take off wheels from a 2007 GMC 3500 van. They have some road grime from the week the guy drove them last winter but other than that they're spotless. 16x6.5 with about 5" of backspacing to the outer edge of the bead.:D

Would the above mentioned wheels, be a similiar fit, when compared to the typical Black Steelies with the standard(?) 4.5" backspacing? Are they any cheaper? Advantages/Disadvantages?

They have similar backspacing and size to the 1986 OEM wheels. 16x6.5 with about 5" of backspacing. Works perfect. The rear tires are completely under the fenders and the fronts seem to be just about perfectly in between not hitting the fenders and not hitting the suspension or steering (well, except for the draglink...but not as hard as it used to).

My back up plan was some of those steelies but I found mine through craigslist semi-locally for $100. Hell of a deal and my brother in law could pick them up the next weekend.

Just the front. In the rear the tires almost fit with the untouched fenders. I was just going to nibble the lower edges but then the grinder talked me into going full hog.

The place I got mine from had trimmed the very bottom lower edges of the wheel wells just a little to make the HMMWV 36's fit. The guy who gave me this idea said he only had to trim back to the fender liners to make his fit and he didn't do any suspension mods.
I recently got another set of 3/4 ton axles and put my 11x16's back on the CUCV. Now they hit in the front just a little, but the 10bolt spring mount is alittle shorter than the dana60. The clearance is pretty close and the wheel offset, or spring mount height can make a difference. I actually trimmed mine back to the inner wheelwell and used a BFH to push the inner back a bit. I never trimmed my rears, it looked like they would hit but after a trip to the gravel yard where they loaded a little over 4000 lbs in the bed, I quit worrying about it.

Hey man, the inspiration of all my troubles is here!

So, got any pictures of the fenders? I'm going to flex it out today in a while and see if it needs trimming.

I don't have any new pics of the fenders, camera died and I'm not checked out on the wifes new one. But mine aren't trimmed any more than yours. Mine hits now on the inner fender just a little, needs some "adjusting". I'll try to get some pics.

My fronts are only trimmed down at the bottom where the fenders sorta hooks under the body. I don't know how much more I'll need but I can always get rid of the lip there and a bit above it.

Gotta go walk the dogs and then I'm off to find out.

To quote from my flex thread:
Well, I ended up cutting more after doing the '86 K30 imitation of flexing on the barn foundation. The rears were a-okay but the front I ended up taking a lot more out. Looks booty fab right now but I'll fix it soon. Had to get it so I could get down the road to the alignment shop right now.

I sorta trimmed along the bottom of the fender right next to the inner fender liner and then up and in to the edge. Not sure how high but at least 8". It ends just below the little round hole mine has on each fender lip about 8-12" up.
Drove it down the road today and man, what a difference. No more death wobble, the tires are smooth and actually quieter than the HMMWV tires, and the engine is noticeably quieter at speed thanks to the 2-3" taller tires. I'm diggin' it.:D

No pics as it was dark within an hour of me starting but I should hopefully have some soon. My b-day is tomorrow and we should be picking it up from the alignment shop tomorrow night.

I was kinda annoyed to find that the p-side front fender had a decent amount of bondo where it has a nice dent in the sheetmetal apparently. The place I got it from decided to just bondo over the dent instead of actually fixing the issue. Oh well, the eventual plan is fiberglass...

Dial uppers beware...wtf are you still using dial up for anyways?:D

Drives pretty good but need to deal with the air pressure in the tires. 40psi is definitely too high so we'll see how 35psi does and go down from there.

Moving the axle forwards an inch probably would have eliminated the need for trimming or anything near what I had to do. As it is the tires will still rub the back of the inner liners. Oh well, nothing damaging and eventually they're going bye bye for some fiberglass replacements.

Definitely not going much higher until after we move!

now when are the dents coming?

I think the bondo I found covers some.

Well, I actually have a payment on this vehicle and it's my baby...so no dents. Kinda fell out of the hard core wheeling scene a few years back and also it's more of a tow, haul, two track truck than a rock crawler, mud buggy, or true all wheeler.

That said after I get the rusty rockers replaced with some rocker rails with some step/tree/berm bars and things might get a bit more adventurous.

I should have some "flex" shots soon. I flexed it out last night on the barn foundation/berm and well...it flexes like a 1 ton.

I think the Tracker and it are going to have a flex-off pretty soon. Tracker might just win.

Nice... I like it. That trimming at the rear of the front fender isn't bad at all. I am close to that now. How much turn radius did you lose? Is it 100% driveable as is?

I hope to get my two rear tires mounted tomorrow and get all four fitted up:D
