Well, bought a BBC..... lots of pics

Very NICE score !!!!

You will be ruined forever once you feel the grunt and balls of a BBC - there will be no going back after you realize you have throttle to spare .......
Congrats ! Tom

That will be a good engine for your truck. It is a good that it came with Oval Port heads, as opposed to Square Port, because it will give you good low-end torque, which is want you want in a truck. If you put flat top pistons in that engine, then my guess is the compression will be about 10.5 to 1, which is a little high for the street, but do-able. Make sure the heads valves are modern "hardened for unleaded gas" type valves, since it came out of such an old car.

I looked up your casting numbers, and this is what you have.

Block : 3963512....454.......70-76...2 or 4 bolt

Heads: 3872702....65-66...oval..CLOSED..396, 427, 98cc chamber

I am not sure if these heads will bolt up to a 454. Does anybody else know? You may also need hardened valve seats for an old set of heads like yours.

I guess i didnt look to close but i would hope those heads will bolt on that block, i dont see why not.

Thanks For running the numbers for me.

No reason they shouldn't work. I have some heads off a 396 I'll be putting on a 454. They all pretty much will interchange... except for tall-deck big blocks and the newer style ('90s) blocks.

Two bolt blocks are good to 600 horse. Add an ARP main stud kit. Is the crank forged? Check the casting line on the counterweights. If it is a quarter inch or so, forged. Just a thin line indicates cast. Forged cranks are stronger, but for street and mild performance, a cast works fine.

You got a good deal.... 2 bolt blocks are fine, no need for a 4 bolt.

For a DD I would bore the block and put it back together with the stock crank and rods ( recondition them if needed ). Replace the cam and lifters.

For a trail truck I would build a 496 by using a stroker crank and longer rods.... No need to buy the expensive stuff.......Scat nodular iron cranks and I beam rods are plenty strong enough....The 496 makes lots of torque and they are very dependible...Again sell the cam and lifters you have and buy one that suits your needs....

2 bolt mains:whistle:
I prefer two bolts mains over 4 bolts anyways.

You can always install splayed 4 bolt mains which puts the outter bolts on an angle, and it's much stronger than a straight 4 bolt because of where stock 4 bolts drill into the webbing..........

Part description from Milodon kit:

Main Caps Angle Bolt Big Block Chevy
These aftermarket main bearing caps strengthen factory two-bolt blocks. They're made from precision-machined high strength steel, which has the proper balance of strength and flexibility to allow transfer of increased shock loads to the crank and bearings. The secret is in the side bolts. They are angled so they pull from the side walls of the block and not the flimsy main web area (where the stock outter bolts in a 4 bolt main go). They'll also load the cap against the register step, which will prevent dreaded "cap walk." They can be installed by anyone with a hand drill and a tap, and come with all necessary bolts, washers, and the drill bushing needed to complete the installation.

Besides, stock 2 bolts mains are more than strong enough for street motors.
