I've caved..

I bought a little sh!tbox econo car for commuting. I don't know how I made it through last summer, but doing 300+ miles a week sucked at 11mpg

I found a '90 Nissan Sentra.. got it for $500 :D 172k on the clock, has a new clutch, new cv joints, and runs really good. The only major issues are it needs door hinges(doors sag) and a passenger side lock cylinder :D

I forgot how fun and nimble a little car can be..

The burb's aren't leaving at all, but I won't be driving my baby as much(once or twice a week to keep her fresh) and will have more money for parts :D

congrats! honestly, it only makes sense. and i cant believe it took me so long to realize that buying a commuter car would allow me to relegate the truck to toy status and allow me to really do all the things to it i wanted to. i loved driving the truck on the daily, and still do a few times a week and if i need to haul stuff, but my little diesel jetta has been awesome. and its pretty bad ass that if all i do is commute to and from work, with no road trips, i fill up the tank once a month.

although with the fuel economy i get, ive found its alot easier to justify long road trips to go see friends that i couldnt in the truck for expense reasons.

My econobox handles the daily driving duties, but no matter how ugly or needing work it is, I care more about the truck than I do the car.

Much rather have the car totalled, than the truck.

you gotta do what you gotta do.......;)

I think after I move to Kentucky I'm going to look for a little economobile as well. Even a 4cyl 2wd truck. Right now $500 won't buy you more than rusty, bad running **** up here and they get eaten alive by winter roads.

My DD/econocar is a '98 S-10 Jimmy. While not that great for mileage in town, its perfect for my use, needs and just the right size. It still beats any of the "beaters" that I own, build, work on, etc.

I'd really like to find a Grand Am like I once had. It was a '95 with the V-6 and got 28 in town and 35 on highway. These years are getting hard to find especially in good condition.

I just paid off the Jimmy yesterday after paying for the past 14 months on it. Sure feels good to be free and clear of a car payment again. Now I'm just paying on my house and shop. Easy living, eh?

I had a friend who had two vehicles.

1 - His Nova that he was almost afraid to drive on the street due to the immense value and 500hp engine.

2 - His "whatever it was at the moment" $500 beater vehicle. He'd find vehicles for stupid cheap that ran and moved, drive them until he had to either replace them or put more than an oil change or set of brake pads on them, and then scrap them and buy another similar beater. He did that for years while I knew him.

yeah, i learned my lesson with cheap beaters. i always bought a car for a grand or so, dumped a few grand into em to get em up to my standards, and then id still always be fixing crap.

the jetta was the first car i ever bought with A/C, made this century, with airbags, and all i had to repair was the front brakes, replace the windsheild, and drive. totally worth the $5000 pricetag. especially with my 44mpg commuting, and 65mpg on the highway. and i can actually take girls on dates in it :)

for the record, not many girls around here like some guys on the forum have managed to marry.... or at least get involved with. round these parts, the blazer tends to be a date ender. ive had girls decline a ride home in the truck, they'd rather pay for a taxi lol.

That sounds like me...

The funny part is I've been increasingly checking the Lexington, KY Craigslist as I'll be living there shortly. $500-1000 gets you a lot nicer looking and running vehicle than it does in Northern Michigan.

Less rust, less white trash, and less meth heads I think.

I drive 120 miles a day round trip and the big chevy gets about 6-10 mpg so i have always had a ****box current is a 99 honda accord previous was a 91 honda accord both get 30+ mpg last one drove over 300k miles 70k was on the same oil.

Now, my burb is clean inside and out, most chicks dig it :wink1:

Definitely won't be picking 'em up in this thing though.. when I got it, it smelled like a combo of ass and mexican food, Febreeze and Ozium have helped a lot :haha:

Oddly my membership just expired.. next pay day I'll renew.

now i gotta say, ive been looking longingly at the chevy volt if i put away enough money in the next year or so and have a decent job situation, ill probably get one. i think it could be the car that saves the company if it lives up to its hype. although, i made the horrible mistake of looking up the volts distant twin.

the opel ampera

much sexier than the volt, but with all the positive benifits. although it still really burns my butt cheeks that the extended range ICE is gasoline powered instead of one of the ecotec CDTI engines.

if anyone is curious about how effective that would be... another beautiful opel car that i would love to have as my commuter... the opel eco speedster. 112hp/155mph top speed/and on a 24 hour period the car averaged 140mph and 113mpg. :eek1:

of course.... neither really would qualify as a $500 beater :D

Damn city girls....:haha::haha::haha:

Well I drive a 91 Nissan Micra. I think I'd win the gheyest and ugliest car contest. It's hit a dear hard, it's a little bent but it gets about 70 miles a day. I paid 1800 Canadian for it, put about 90,000 miles on it, all I've done is maintenance and tires and I think I'll get another 70,00 miles more on it. Got a little 1200 cc carbed motor. I love little import beaters.

imports rebadged as domestics......
