Well everyone has a build thread so... UPDATE 9/10 K5 is down again.

Well yesterday I picked up muddinmanny's old drive shaft. The plan is to take the shaft and have it shortened to fit my k5.

Here are some pics of the broken yoke.

oh crap, thats pretty bad, how much is a shortening of a shaft gonna run you? i was just up at manny house on saturday! hes was really cool and good to shoot the bull with too. glad to see you got a good solution.

So I think something may be wrong with the transfer case now as well.

When I went to remove the old yoke from the case it would not come out without help from the BFH.

Went we stuck the old yoke into manny's tcase is slid right in.

However, the yoke I got from manny wont do that. I would have to hammer it back in, which is not good.

It will go on the splines fine but it seems that the housing of the case bends down in relation to the slipyoke.

This is very hard to describe but it seems as if something is bent in the case or output shaft or something. Please Please help me.

Ya manny said you came and got those axles. it was cool to meet him.

is the spline count the same? im sure it is but i dont think theyre keyed. i wish i could help you but if thats the case 208's are prety easy to find, i would be down to help you take it off if you need it, ill be wrenchin spring break on my axles and ill cruise up your way to help. maybe you bent the chain sprocket deal? thats all i can think of. i got to be in class 5 minutes ago soo hope i can help.

Dustin,

I'm really concerned here. The 208's are interchangeable and not keyed.

I hope that angle on the slip yoke in the pictures you posted above didn't damage anything. Ouch! That would hurt.

Dude, I'm here to help. Anything I can do I will.

Manny

I think (don't know) that the splines are messed up in the T-case. Because of how short the the slip yoke (the piece you broke) was into the case I'd bet the splines took a beating. Is your slip yoke a full length spline style or a
one that has them only part way?

WAG here, when you were pulling your buddy out under torque the slip yoke got cocked and thats what broke the ear off.

Internet diagnosis...worth every penny you paid for it

When looking down the transfer case, the splines don't look damaged. It seems as if the housing of the transfer case itself is what is causing the bind.

Dustin,

If the slip yoke of my driveshaft is causing you the problem, then I am willing to accept the driveshaft back and refund you the money you gave me. I don't want you to be out anything. Just let me know if that's the course you want to take. Whatever I can do to help you, I will.

Thanks!

Hey Manny, I'm 100 % sure it's not the slipyoke I got from you.

I'm sure its my transfer case because to get my old yoke out, I had to hit it out with the hammer but it slipped right into your transfer case. The shaft from you is the correct one.

pull your tailshaft housing off your t-case and get a better look at what's going on there. I have had that exact break before and messed up the bearing retainer when it unloaded

Well I pulled the tailshaft off the transfer case last night. The output shaft bearing is in good shape, however there is some play in the entire output assembly so the whole case needs a rebuild. But, the case is still operational though, which is great news for me.

The case will be getting a rebuild after my next paycheck.

Anybody know where I can get a rebuild kit for an NP 208? O'Reillys doesn't stock the kit.

Anybody know of any good NP 208 rebuild writeups/books?

I dropped my driveshaft off this morning to Seguin Driveline in Seguin Texas.

The shaft was ready today at 4 so my buddy went and picked it up for me. The K5 will be back in operation tonight after work.

Daayyyyyyyyyyyum! That was fast!

Well yall, she is back up and running.

Last night after work I gave the new driveshaft a coat of blue paint and got her installed. I also changed my front differental oil and gave the cover a nice coat of blue paint as well.

I know painting these items doesn't do anything, but to me it add that little extra "touch" that I'm sure yall can understand.

Anyways, tonight possibly I will address some powersteering issues in the truck. She pretty much loses all powersteering at idle. If the RPMs are up she turns fine. I plan on draining the powersteering fluid, changing both hoses because they leak, possibly add a cooler and bleed the air out.

I think that should take care of that.

Thanks to those of you who responded so far to my build thread.

I think I am also going to replace the u joints in the front axle and front drive shaft as they have never been changed. I feel that this will give me a little added protection when we make the run to Shiloh at the end of april.

The next modification I have lined up is a manual choke conversion kit.

The electric choke of my quadrajet is a POS. :angry1: Most of the time, it will set the truck to fast idle and will never kick down. It will keep the truck reved to 2000 RPM even after the truck is warm. There have been times when I have tried to shut the truck down, even in gear, and it will diesel. I will have to get out and manually kick the idle down.

I have adjusted the choke several times to no avail. The other day I bought the choke coversion kit from O'Reillys so that will get installed soon as well.

I also need tires to for the rig, but I am waiting to see how much I get back on my tax return. I'm thinking I'm gonna get some 35x12.50 BF Goodrich MT's or some 36x12.50 TSL's. That is still up in the air and has not gotten much thought yet.

X2 You dont mess around .... :eek1: :haha:

Haha ya. I had to get her up and running as she is my DD and I hate walking.

I like to keep my workouts down to spinning wrenches and doing those 12 oz curls.
