Background...1984k5, 350sbc (crate motor less than 5k), th400 (less than 7k since FULL rebuild) stock np208, 3.73 10bolts with lockright in the rear...for about a month when you put it in reverse you get the nasty "im going to blow up soon" clunk.

TOnight it happened. went to see a movie, left went to 1girls house to say hi. as i left i put it in reverse then drive. as i left i noticed said clunking noise. it gets worse and your speed increases. (Not RPM) it is non-motor related. (while driving i shut the truck off with it in N adn it still knocked)

It is worse under acceleration. Im thinkin hte Torque converter bolts may have backed off, or that something in the case or rear end blew up...If yuo put in N and coast it goes away...well almost. Put in D or 2nd and its still there, but i guess that in 1st for somereason it isnt too bad. its still bad but not horrible.

any thoughts?

Tomorrow is wehnn it gets torn apart. Thing is its my DD...so i NEED it fixed by Tuesday...And i hope i dont get to do another rearend swap in a day...

And once the carnage is discovered there will be pics...if theyre worth a ****.:D Maybe the k5 will become 3/4 ton and the mudtruck will get a different set.

from my experience it doesnt sound like a rear end, i could be wrong though. i hope you get it fixed in time.

Me too...im not sure thouhg, i cralwed under on the side of the road and the shaft felt REAL tight. it may be a u-joint too...

OH and it did it in 4high and 4low. well i guess really it was 2high/2low (didnt lock in hubs)

you have a lockright, so there is automatically enough play now in the diff to create that "clunk" when you switch between reverse and drive.

I categorically deny ever having the torque converter bolts get loose, which makes truly amazing noises. :deal:

Also easy to check. Then again, if you can jack the truck up on both ends (I stocked up when Harbor Freight had the 12-ton stands on sale! :D ) then you can play with it to your heart's content and find your culprit ... without actually driving it. Though your neighbors may think you're weird for running your truck in the air =))

Nope...I blew up the ring gear. its missing about 8teeth, and the tops of them too!:D :eek1:

Ill get pics later. Once its all taken apart.

The lockright never made too much of a clunking.

Now the decision is wrether to stick with 3.73s or go to 4.10s.

Im going to borrow my sister truck. advance had the gears instock. so i could install them myseft. but im just goin to skpi the last 2classes of school tomorrow and have the shop do it. like 150 installed if i bring it to them.

id go 14ff but i brought that up with mi dad...he flipped a ****. :p he says" thats just more money to make sure its OK" haha

Correct me if I'm wrong, but does the gears show incorrect/off/wrong contact patch from yellow/green ink (or is that gear oil?) on the teeth?

Looks like Gear oil to me

It's gear oil...i prolly set the gears up wrong, (they came out of a junk rear) Thats why the shop is doing the next set.

I filled the ring gear for about 1inch with blue grease and the contact patch looked good to me. It meshed from about the middle of the gears all the way across.

O.K.

Would that show incorrect contact patch if that was the case?

Or, would that be (gear oil like in the pic) a reliable telltale sign?
