The transmission blew on my '04 GTO and the thought of getting down on the floor to pull that thing wasn't a favorable image in my head. I could have just taken it in somewhere, but there's no where I really trust, and everytime I take a car in for something, it seems, they F it up or don't do what I ask. And, being a corvette drivetrain I figured they'd soak me. I actually did call a few places, they were talking in the $4k range to pull and rebuild that tranny.

So, I decided to DIY, (of course), and spend what I save on a lift for my garage. At least that how I justified it to my wife :pimp:

Bendpak, HDS-14 14,000lbs 4 post with 2 rolling hyrdo/air jacks for wheel service, along with a few accessories, like high lift trans jack, oil drain and jack stands.

Oh...I believe I will like this purchase. It's an investment....

You'll like it, I used to have a 9K version at my machine shop although I did not have the rolling jacks.

THose jacks were half the cost of the lift itself, I could have used the jack trays and some bottle jacks, but I figured, what the heck, might as well go all the way...

Nice! I've always had a two post and loved it. Haven't worked of a 4 post. The rolling jacks will be sweet.

you know what thay all say dont you ? ? ? ?

once you go lift you wont go back to the floor :D

and best choice you made was 2 rolling jacks .

there is pro's and cons to both 2 and 4 post lifts . but they can be worked around .

i use to work in a shop with 4 9klbs 2 post / 1 12k 2 post / 1 15k 2 post and a 10k 4 post . each had its great use and this job sucked on here whish i had it on the other rack . for what your going to do you should be just fine. just make sure the floor is thick to spec for were you want it to sit .

What's the price tag on the whole setup?

$6950.

They threw in the jack stand and oil drain for free, and waived the terminal holding fee. Lift was $4155, the rolling jacks are $1125/ea. Transjack is a nice ranger 1.5T (1.5t 1st stage, 1T 2nd stage, with foot pedal pump)

There were cheaper lifts for sure, but none in the 10k lbs + range were ALI/ETL certified except for BendPak and Rotary, the rotary would be nice, but the same 14klbs lift was $1300 more, still wasn't US made either (the only US made ones were not certified and seemed like much smaller marketed lifts) Rotary does have a "revolution" line that was alot cheaper, but none of those were certified. My guess, probably the exact same lift, but, who knows, no real good place to see these, especially in the exact model you want, to compare them.
Also rotary's rolling jacks where $1900 compared to bendpak's $1125. You could probably fit bendpaks jacks on rotarys lifts ....but, rail is different so would require some engineering to do it.

According to some guys on the GTO and Corvette forums that have had the exact same 6SP transmission issue I have (loss of 5,6 and reverse), I should only need about $500 in parts. Compared to talking to tranny shops on the phone, and R&R on this is gonna be close to $4k, so I'm saving $3500 there, so I'm really only spending $3450, right?:whistle:

i have also worked on 2 and 4 post i like both. i put a forward 10k 2 post in my shop. you will love it !!!! i had an asshole steal my 4wheeler so my insurance cut me a check after 2 months which paid for mine.

I've been thinking VERY seriously the last year or so about a 9k 2 post lift. I want a 2 post because it seems far more flexible for the type things I would do in addition to vehicle lift. Like lifting a body, bed, cab, tractor, or even my motorcycle with an adapter frame.

But I'm hesitant for a few reasons.

For one, I beat my body up pretty bad when I was young, and didn't realize how much more I was going to be paying for it (with compounding interest) later in life. That's a big reason I got out of trucks for the most part. It's just gotten to painful to work on them, but a lift might change that. Then again, it might not, and the risk of spending that much and still not being able to really do anything is what keeps me from pulling the trigger.

The other problem is I don't have enough room under cover. So I would either have to build another building (city codes?) or (more likely) have it out in the open. Not sure how well it would hold up like that. My friend has a drive on 4 post lift outside for the last 15 years and still going strong, so not sure about that one.

That's not even that much $$$.

After doing 80% of the work on my blazer using a lift.... Ill be buying one when I have my own place setup to fit one.

Its not even a want anymore, its a necessity any more. It really makes everything 100x easier.

I have a 9K two post lift in my garage. Mine is an Atlas brand and is a foreign made knockoff of a Bendpak and it is not certified. I would love to have a Bendpack but could not justify double the cost for a weekend use lift. Mine came from Greg Smith Equipment in Deleware (http://www.gregsmithequipment.com/Atlas-OH9000_2) and I drove and picked it up. With and oil drain and two safety stands I paid just under $2k 2 years ago.

It works well. Last month I had a Dually Megacab Cummins truck on it to install a lift pump and had no issues. I would not use mine everyday in a shop but it works well for the weekend warrior like me.

My building is 12'6" tall inside and there are 8-9" of rebar reinforced concrete under the lift. They only require 4" but that seems thin to me. I love the 2 post and have used to lift lots of things. It is great for lifting axles, motors, etc into the bed of your truck.

To the OP I am jealous of the BendPak and those rolling jacks look nice.

Way to go on the lift purchase, a friend had two (1) new in box, (1) used and I didn't buy either one.:doah:

I had planned to have a lift in my quonset garage someday, but funds ran out by the time I got the thing built, the driveway extended to reach it,etc..I have never had it wired for power either, its only had a heavy gauge extention cord running from the house to get 110V out to it...have to use the 220V socket in the house when I want to weld, and it sucks, being only 20A..

I did miss out on a few chances to buy a used lift real cheap, two that a friend had in a shop that was sold were to be torn out by the new owner, and I stupidly didn't pursue them, one was a drive on ramp alignment rack with 11,000 lb capacity that worked well, could have had the alignment machine too--one day I came to his shop and a ramp truck was loading the lift into its bed "I just sold it for 100 bucks "..had a rolling air jack too, beat but still worked OK..:doah:..to make it worse he sold it to a jerk customer he didn't really like..why I wasn't told it was for sale,i dont know.."friends" are weird like that sometimes..:dunno:..

The other lift was a 2 post POS with only 6K capacity, that had been re-hashed several times,it had a goofy timing belt drive from the motor to a acme screw threaded rod on each side to do the lifting and both sides had the "nuts" strip out, they had to have bronze ones made at a machine shop to fix it--it also had a floor plate with a motorcycle chain drive under it to power the acme screw on the side opposite the motor..I passed on that one,it was made in Italy and was impossible to get parts for any more..too risky to put any of my trucks on it that weigh more empty than its full load capacity..

He also had one of those mid rise low lift things with one cylinder that lies on the floor--thing was useless to me,was great for bending driveshafts,no good to use pulling a tranny, and it only lifted 3 feet high--might be ok for a tire shop or doing brakes, nothing else..he gave it away just to be rid of it..

My brother also sold a like new lift when he decided to upgrade, but one of his friends had "first dibs"...so much for that one..

Like Bad Dog,my body has seen better days now too,and even with a lift I wouldn't want to be under a vehicle for long,I get in pain too fast now to be very usefull fixing any vehicles, even my own..it sucks because the quonset is perfect for a lift,no rafters or ceiling in the way,and its 13+ feet high in the center..
I'm in a residential zone though, and they frown upon any "home garages" that might do under the table repairs, only a select few here with the right last names can do that "illegally" and get away with it...I'd get turned into the IRS if I felt well enough to do any work for people on the sly most likely, and get harassed by the town,so why bother now..

I wish I had a lift now,my oil pan is leaking worse and I've put off replacing it since 2010 I think..and I cant seem to talk my "friend" into doing it for me on his lift even if I pay him well too,(same guy who sold the lift)--so I may have to risk trying to do it myself on my back in the driveway,or see if any other garage will do it reasonably--one place I asked wanted 400 bucks!..I told them I wanted them to FIX the truck--not BUY it!..:eek1:

I installed a 2 post asymetrical 10,000lb Rotary in my shop. One of the best investments I have made. No more crawling around on my back. Except for my truggy which is on jack stands.:haha:I went with Rotary they are more money then most but they have been around for ever and did not want to skimp on something that is holding a vehicle over my head. Nice four post setup.:waytogo:
