Lemme be the first to say that almost everything ive done to my blazer ive never done b4 in life, meaning working on it to the extent that I have. So today, I changed the tie rod ends and the drag link. I had never done this b4 and wasnt sure how involved it would be. It was a lil more difficult than I had thought. Getting the old parts off was a chore and getting the pass. side tie rod end out of the rod itself was a major PITA. I had to have a big ole boy with a pipe wrench to break it loose.

I am glad to say that everything went back together jus fine. My steering is way off, about 45 degrees. But the toe seems to be good. I jus drove it 30miles and no wondering at all. Ill still get it aligned. etc.

But it did tighten up steering alot. With this and the XJ shaft, im good to go.

Though id share.

Do a search (not tryin to be funny). But basically you get an XJ (cherokee) steering shaft (its splines are the same as K5). The XJ one uses U joints instead of the prone to failure rag joints. It tightens up the steering and takes some slop out of it. Its a simple process. you do have to notch the steering part coming from K5 fire wall though (do search and there are pics/illustrations on how to)

I've got my XJ shaft sitting in the garage all painted up and greased up ready to be slapped on. I can't wait to see if it really makes that much difference. I know the rag joint on my factory one looks horrible. Everyone I talk to says I'm missing a gasket or something.

Keep in mind, that if you have worn out OTHER steering parts, the XJ shaft will only help a lil bit. I wish I wouldve done the XJ shaft AND the rest at once to see the big diff. Everything is tighter and more responsive now. But dont expect sportscar steering though. ;)

the steering u-joint from a chevy astro / gmc safari van fits as well. its what I'm using.
