Well, what do ya know....

The place I'm in now has a heated, insulated pole barn with a bathroom. It also has another barn that my motorhome fits in. You might think I'm bragging, but here's the thing: I can't use either of them! They are not included in the lease, but I can see them both as I walk to the uninsulated garage to burn off massive amounts of propane with a construction heater. 80,000 BTU gets it toasty, but 20 minutes after shutting it off the cold is back. Fortunately I can fit the truck in the garage, but I haven't tried it yet at full tire pressure.

That totally sucks dude. Do those buildings just sit there empty too? That would drive me nuts.

I have the room to build a good size garage or barn but it's not in the cards right now. My fear is that by the time the cards are right, I'll be too old to use it.

Ive been real careful w my money and watched what I paid for things and its still costing about twice what I was hopin.:doah: We've been here 9years now and just now gettin to build,

Yeah, I've had my house going on 10 years now. Still putting money into the house for upgrades/repairs. Gonna need a new roof next year. Still working on new windows and siding. The list never ends.

Thats kind of what happened to me--I decided when I was in my early 30's I'd never be able to afford my own home or property, and my parents were both getting older and ill with multiple diseases,so I moved back in with them so I could help them, and I built the quonset garage on their property...

Shortly after I got the thing built,my back pain started getting worse, and I wasn't able to use it as much as I'd hoped, plus I'd run out of cash ,so I never did get the lift I always dreamed of after working on my back outside on the ground for years on my many vehicles, nor did I ever get the garage wired properly or connected to the houses electrical service, that would have been another 1000 bucks easy..been running what few tools I use in it off a extention cord for a long long time, and it sucks not having 220V out there to run my welder or compressor, they had to stay in the garage built under the house, which is more like a bedroom with an overhead door, you cant do much in it because any fumes will get in the house..

Now that I'm 20 years older than when I built it,and my spine is bothering me more than ever,I only do work in my garage infrequently, its more of a storage bin than a garage,or a lounge, than the "workshop" I envisiond having ...and soon I'll probably be forced to leave it behind when my mom passes, its unlikely I'd ever end up with the property,or have any means of paying for it even if I did...I wish I had built it in my 20's,instead of working outside in the slush and cold, things would be a lot different today..

I'll admit its nice having a big garage,IF you can use it!..but right now I could use the 8 grand I spent buying the quonset and getting it built more than the building in ways..be different if I felt well enough to MAKE money in it..but I tried that before, and it led to zoning issues and visits from the town selectman,so I gave up trying to work at home in it ,before I got my parents in trouble..sucks living in a yuppie town where your neighbors wont let you make 10 cents at home without ratting you out...

The landlord's son has his 5th wheel in the one barn. The other one has stuff stored in it - including the wood stove that used to sit in the garage! Apparently the insurance is pretty high for renters+wood stove+ garage. As for the barns, I'm assuming it's a combination of of insurance, not wanting the hassle of moving all that stuff and having another place to put all the stuff.

I don't know how long I'll be in this area, which is why I didn't just buy the place.

Ok 4" lift & 35's...how tall is that garage door? My K20 w/4" & 35's fit my parents 7' door just fine and my cousins 92 F250 w/SAS 4" springs 4" from the swap on 37" Goodyear OZ's JUST BARELY fits in the door. I thought they were 8' doors until I was correctly by my father the other day. Was good to hear because I plan on raising my K20 another inch or two and putting 37's on it in the next year or so.

I'm about to start on a 30x30x10 pole barn/garage at my house after New Years...can't wait to have ROOM to work on stuff.

I never did measure the opening. I'm guessing a standard 7' but nothing about my house has been "standard". There's newer pavement outside the door so when you drive into the garage it kinda steps down. I know visually the top of the truck didn't line up with the top of the opening. I think the biggest issue is the rack on top of the cap. I had to get it low enough for that to clear.

I will add though, since I got it in there and was able to better inspect things, turns out my radiator is fine. Just had to replace the hoses. The upper was cracked and split right where it meets the radiator inlet and under the hose clamp. It wouldn't leak all the time, and when it did it must have been a mist and would spray everywhere. Really hard to find without my pressure tester (must have let someone borrow it a long time ago, no idea where it is now).

So, $25 worth of hoses and about 3 gallons of coolant later.... no more leaky leaky. 3 gallons? you ask. I have an enormous old copper/brass radiator. It's freakin huge. The PO must have had it put in. Crappy job too. I had to customize the upper brackets and make rubber cushions out of old rubber floor mats to make it fit better.

rant off.

Good to hear it was an easy fix man. I'd try and get my truck in the garage, but I think my mom would **** a brick.

Well, the wife KNOWS who's garage it is.

The rest of the house is hers though.
