....and after an icy doughut or two i was driving straight down the road and hammered the brakes, its the first time ive noticed that my fronts lock up but not my rears.. ( they barely seem to grab at all) and i realized that i had not pulled the prop valve out of the donor truck. is it possible that its that easy of a fix ( an aftermarket prop valve, and a bit of tinkering?) its hydroboost by the way. it stops good after i pump the brakes once or twice but just noticed that the rears realllly arent helping me..

thanks!

It's not that uncommon for rear brakes to not be working...and you not know it. How do the shoes and drums look? What about the hardware and wheel cylinders? If that stuff checks out, and the hydroboost was swapped in....then I'd look into switching out the valve.

All trucks don't lock up the rear brakes, that is what the prop valve is for, it's so you apply more of the brake power to the front, otherwise your rear end would be trying to swing around and pass you of you hit the brakes hard.

are your rear drum brakes adjusted properly?

They are and they brake fine too, they just don't LOCK up, they are not supposed to lock up.
The 3/4 ton and 1 ton chevy I have, both have a gadget that relases the brake if the bed lifts up, that is for when the truck is unloaded, because the less wheight you have on the rear the less you want in braking power, as noted above, you don't want your rear to swap ends with the front, if it locks up it's dangerous.

he said he has to pump the brakes, to me that says they need adjusted.

i also rather have full control over my brakes. mine lock up on my 85, hydroboost.

They SHOULD self adjust...when you stop in reverse they adjust. But if the adjusters are siezed that don't happen.

Rear brakes apply before the fronts do. That's controled by the prop/metering/combo valve. He should be able to get them to lock up on snow/ice. Find an empty snowy parking lot, get moving, pop it in neutral and hammer on the brakes. See if all four lock up or just the fronts.

FWIW: The rear brakes lock up before my fronts do on my K5. But thats with disc's all the way around.

i should have mentioned that i have discs in the rear and they are brand new pads/rotors/calipers with a fresh bleed.

I guess ill try it again in neutral, but i know i need to order a prop/metering valve... i know wilwood makes one, as well as inlinetube.com any experience with either of these manufac's? or another ?

thanks
