Went to look at a '75....turned out to be a '71 GMC!

Shouldn`t be a big block at all, if it`s stock. If the valve covers have 4 bolts each, then it`s a small block. Looks like a sweet deal, I`d be all over that.

Oh I know it's not stock, according to the seller this is the 3rd motor to be in the truck...so anything goes at that point.

I looked at the engine pic of this truck in your build thread, and it is a small block, displacement is impossible to tell without running numbers.

small block will have 3 tubes on the factory exhaust manifold, big blocks will have 4.....fastest way for people that dont know the small from big block......

Top of windshield frame and passenger side rocker are the only major rust spots.

:haha::haha::haha::haha::haha::haha::haha::haha:

Stop it, hee heee heee heee heee.....yer killin' me!!!

Honestly, I hope your right but based on what I see on those front floors I'm guessing you've got more rot in the front cab supports too. Don't take it personally, all of the 1st Gen guys (myself included) have had to deal with a lot more rust than we first thought.

Well...I can't see the ground through the floor like it was on my '73, and this guy with the '71 wasn't stupid with Bondo like my truck's PO. I can deal with rust...but i hate Bondo (and sheetmetal screws...)

This truck has been sitting so long that I know there will be more rust, but this was just an intial look, and I'll have a better diagnosis after I can clean out all the junk and get a better idea of where it's at.

easiest way to tell a sbc from a bbc for those who are unfamiliar, is the exhaust manifolds.

small block manifold pipes are spaced [o oo o], with the two center pipes being close together.

big block manifold pipes are equally spaced [o o o o ], with the gaps between the pipes all the same.

some of us just cover it up with sheetmetal and hope for it not to come back.someday i will do as good a job as you have on yours greg.my goal is still to get it back to legal and be able to drive it again.
stevo, great find.mine was 2 grand and a lot more rust than that.30 yrs in texas helped with that im sure.:haha:

ok, picked up the '71 last night. Final price ended up being $350 plus the $38 fee for title transfer. He also threw in a spare on a matching wagon wheel, and 6 other tires.

While it was up on the flatbed I had an easier time checking the state of the sheetmetal. The "torsion" boxes are intact, only some minor surface rust. rockers and fenders aren't great, but not swiss cheese either. bottom of the fender under the battery box is rotted out, like usual.

motor looks to be a GM crate motor, holley 4bbl, and, uh, "blackjack" headers. Our friend/wrecker guy wiped off the label on the valve cover and said it was a 290 or 300hp version, so sounds like we've got a stout V8 under the hood if it's not seized up.

still need to get the parts truck across the scales...

kick a$$ first gen Jimmy..everyone knows those are the best :wink1:...and to add to the sb vs bb differences i always look at the valve covers. big blocks are almost twice as wide as small blocks. keep us posted on your build!

yeh go by the valve covers...all small blocks will have 4 on factory covers, and most aftermarket. either around the perimeter or in the center. BB will have 7 around the perimeter.
