What a shame...

that the changes to such a great forum have precluded the participation of longtime users.

Put up or shut up. Name names, outline the unwelcome "changes" and provide proof. Also, if there are long time members that decided to bail, I'd put money down that it was because they got butt hurt over something, not because the price of admission was so steep that they couldn't pay the rent. If you are a Chevy truck owner, this site bar none is one of the best. Therefore, throwing a few bucks down now and again should be a small price to pay. After finishing my Blazer, I bought a 78 F150. So far I haven't found a site anywhere that measures up to this one for resources. I'd give my left nut for a Ford site as good as CK5.;;;

Ok, that settles that. When you mentioned that you had bought a Ford and was looking for a site as good as this, I started casually checking around. I vaguely remembered a couple of sites that seemed quite good.
But not any more.
I have no desire to receive a bloody bulbous object in the mail.....<G>.

I use Ford Truck Enthusiasts but it is huge and few people really lend a hand there quite like here. I also some Bronco sites since they cross over but again, the tech is geared towards the Bronco, not the F150.

So true!

Ive got the 89 f-150, but looking around nothing else come close to the knowedge and friendliness of this site. I was on another old car forum for a couple years but it was far too "nice" and "PC" and I really lost interest. I love it how guys on here will call a spade a spade so to speak and for the most part everyone will agree.

Ah hell. I really didn't mean to piss anyone off, or stir up a hornet's nest.

I've been reading here and occasionally posting for a few years. Primarily from another acct, which is why it shows zero posts on this one.

It's a terrific site. Always has been. So imagine my surprise when on my first visit in some time, I can't post a reply in any thread, can't see pics, etc.

I understand that times are tough, site owners sometimes have to make tough decisions if they want to persevere.

I think what really gets to me is what I've seen on some other sites... where a large community forms and essentially provides all the content (gratis), which is what makes the site valuable to begin with. Then at some point, someone decides to cash in. When that means that valued contributors have to pay for the 'privilege' of continuing to contribute, it just rubs me the wrong way. I was sorry to see that CK5 had apparently chosen that route.

Don't get me wrong, I still find reading the site valuable, and will continue to. Just can't really participate unless I decide to join... maybe when I trade the Sub in for a Blazer I'll reconsider... but I just don't wander through often enough to make it seem sensible to join just so I can post occasionally.

Oh, and thanks for the level-headed reply Rusty. Much appreciated.

Sorry, this has been a pay site for quite a while. Many forums have been locked out for that entire time. The Garage is now and always has been free, and you can post to your hearts content.

This is not something new, and anyone who has been around for the last 4 years would know that. My sub will run out in a day, and it won't be picked up for a while because money is tight right now. It will be picked up at some point though. There are plenty of places that you can participate in that don't require you to pay any money at all. The money is needed to support the site, and that is all there is to it.

Huh....not sure when it went to a pay site, but it's been like that since I registered 5 yrs ago. With all I've learned and been helped by this site, I am more than happy to pay a yearly fee.

I have been around since 2003, it was a pay site then as well, not sure where you've been hiding, but i'm pretty sure you've blown $25 on worse things than a site with as much information, help, and sometimes a different kind of entertainment:doah:

Talk about a new a$$hole ripping... the guy didn't seem to me to be disrespectfull in his 1st post and actually apologized in his second (the first he referred to the archive and people as great) yet the responses to his opinion were... well... school girlish:rolleyes:. Like said before "you should just go away"

this site is well worththe $25. i seldom pay for site use but this one i have no problems doing that

The ironic thing here is that in 2001 the site owner was over $20K in personal debt just trying to keep CK5 up and free. As a collective group we had to twist Steve's arm to get him to introduce the paid memberships. Ya see, we cared enough about this place staying around that it was the only thing that made sense to do. Definitely no 'cashing in'...and now, if Steve makes a modest supplement to his living from this place? Good for him!

Also, in the 9 years there have been paid memberships...the cost has never once been increased. It was $25/yr in 2001, and in 2010 it's still $25. So technically, CK5 is a bigger bargain every year...

Now that sums it up quite nicely. Not many products have remained the same price for 10 yrs........

Now there you go, someone who explains how reasonable it is to pay for membership rather than "go away"... maybe he'll see the light given the chance, and pony up the measly 25 bones. If he still complains then by all means look elsewhere... If this site were mine and depended on PAID members to keep it alive, i'd be a bit erked by someone saying bye bye don't let the door hit you in the a$$. Selling yourself should be important when we're talking about cashola... now more then ever.

Steve has never had the "pay up or get the F out" attitude...ever. The mindset has always been to keep a good part of the site free, and then have 'perks' that came from spending a modest amount of money. No ads, all access to all forums, the ability to see and post attached images, having an avatar, full priviledges in the classifieds forums just to name a few.

If someone doesn't want to pony up for the perks, that's cool too. There are plenty of guys here that don't and they still participate and enjoy the place...and they are also treated equally here from everything I've ever seen. I could name a dozen off the top of my head.

It's not a requirement to buy a membership, and it never has been.

For the record "I" was refering to post #3, not Steve in any way shape or form... that was most likely obvious though .
