What are 'cutting brakes' ?

Re: What are \'cutting brakes\' ?

Lara, cutting brakes are separate brakes on each rear wheel, that can be actuated separate from each other to help steer the vehicle. They are very common on dune buggies /forums/images/icons/smile.gif.

Re: What are \'cutting brakes\' ?

Sandrails use them (as does SW from ORD) to separately actuate the rear brakes, left or right, individually to allow you to lock up the inside tire to facilitate an extremely tight turn............in a sandrail at speed it is way cool........./forums/images/icons/cool.gif

Re: What are \'cutting brakes\' ?

They won't work if you have a locker in the rear unless you can switch to front wheel drive only. Then they can make it realy "turn on a dime". /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Re: What are \'cutting brakes\' ?

Yep if you've driven a tractor then you know what they can do. They won't work with a locker unless you can discontect that axle.

Or you can do a twin-stick 205. That's on my "to do" list somewhere around 2010 at this rate. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Re: What are \'cutting brakes\' ?

Yep that's on my list too. Maybe this winter or next year. I want to get a new/ extra range rail and have it ground for twin sticking. Then when I'm ready I'll put it in.
