What are these metal pieces in my oil pan?

The larger piece is the oil control cover that sits on top of the valve spring. I have seen them come apart when push rods bend, and the rocker arm plays havick with the valve spring and retainer. This is most usually caused from overeving with weak valve springs.

:thinking::whistle::doah:

Sounds about right.

At least, so far, nobody's said they look like pieces from the bottom end. That would REALLY suck.

Now, maybe tomorrow I'll post a pic of the pieces I found in my OTHER engine... :haha:

Well, i got news for you. The big piece looks to be bearing material from somewhere which means lower end.

chewed up none the less...so there might be more internal damage as well...

Yep, full teardown is in order. :doah:

Thanks all!

All of the small tapered pieces are inner damper spring material and not bearing material. The only piece there that is bearing material is the large piece.

So your positive that it isn't part of a valve rotator?

I want money down on this one! :)

I'll take rotator for $5 lol.

Absolutely positive as when BBC's use rotators they are under the springs unlike a SBC and there is no way it could come apart like that and besides there is nothing there that even resembles a rotator piece.

Well, I found more of the fork-tine stuff up top by the springs, no surprise.

The bearings down bottom look okay TO ME, which doesn't mean much. Could be the cam bearings as I couldn't figure out how to get them out.

In any event, the final judgement will be done by a qualified machine shop, i.e. when I take it to Scott

... but jeebus, you should see the ones on my old engine =))

I think this is why the old motor seized! (Note these are NOT from the motor which is the subject of this thread. Yes, I have motor issues.)

Can you shoot a pic of the valve spring setup?

Kinda curious, I figured the rotators were just up top like the other GM stuff I've seen.

That larger piece certainly looks like the outer edge of a valve rotator to me.

The only pictures I found on the net certainly don't look like the top mounted ones I've seen.

I can get you a pic tomorrow if noone gets one tonight. SBC use rotators only on the exhaust springs and they are on the top of the spring but the BBC uses them under the spring between the head and spring and that's only when they do use them. The older heads usually did not use them then the later heads started using them and the latest heads are a crap shoot.

Aaron,

It would probably be best to just bring that motor to Scotty to work on.....

Problem is, the line for "Scott-Built" motors is getting pretty long these days:

I've got two engines with him now (the 502 and 496), Nate has one that needs a rebuild ( I think a 383 stroker on propane?) and Scott is building a monster, AFR-headed 350 for himself too....

Sounds like you'd be #5 in line at this point. :eek1:

Yep; I tore them both down and I'm pestering Scott with questions as to what pieces from what to use, and then I'm gonna drop them all off for him to make right :D

And yeah, I found out about the queue ;)

'Sall good. Sixpack's been out since not making BlazerBash, so more won't hurt.

aaron...looks like bearing material or piston skirt to me...either way its time to tear the old girl apart. I might have a deal for you....say a 90 R2500 burby...with a tbi 454 th400 combo for 1300 from a friend here in junction...

Motor is torn down and being readied to take down to Scott and his machine shop.

LOL ... much as though I *lust* after Burbs ... thanks, but no. No more trucks. Fix the trucks I have. ;)
