So don't use a CD player!

Go get an ipod (or whatever MP3 player you like) burn all your CD's to it, and get one of those combination cigarette lighter plug/holder/FM broadcaster setups for like $40.

No skipping, easily removed, and you can run some cheap stereo that no one will ever be interested in stealing. :)
Exactly what I was going to say.

I wasted money on a CD player that plays MP3/WMA files because the truck is loud enough on its own.

If you get the portable MP3 player and FM modulator, you can use the thing in all your vehicles. Plus bicycle, snowboard, etc...

Like Dorian said, get a cheapo FM radio or cassette deck. I wish I'd done that in the first place.

Oh and I have a 1GB Zen Nano and it will hold close hundreds of songs. They advertise 500, but that is at really low quality. Right now mine is 70% full with 175 songs at a med-high quality.

i have a sony tape player that the PO installed, it works great. everyone asks me why i don't put a CD player in it, i always say people steal CD players, no one wants an old tape player.

im going to run a portible device, MP3 or similar, but im going to skip the deck all together. im going to run a hidden amp and hook the device directly to it.

My iPod (a gift) will hold 20GB of songs. According to the software apple ships with the thing, the songs I've got now (about 5GB worth) are enough to play for 4.5 days straight without repeating a song.

I'm not an audiophile, 5-7MB per MP3 file is plenty good for my ears, but even doubling that file size for better quality you are still talking 750-1000 songs on this iPod.

Personally I'd rather jack it directly into the deck, but I'm not sure they make AM/FM only decks that have an audio input on the face. The rental car I used the FM broadcaster with seemed to be real picky on where the broadcaster was mounted, then again, the airwaves here in Germany seem to be more cluttered with stations than in the states.

But if I had the option, I'd rather have a direct connection between the iPod and the deck.

Both my pioneers never skip. I had an Aiwa in the C10 before I replaced it with the Pioneer. The Aiwa skipped on the mildest of bumps. It was returned within a week. I don't know what happened to Aiwa, they used to make good stuff back in the 80's, their stuff is crap now.

i had a kenwood before the one i had now, it was pretty ancient, a few liquids got poured into it and it has held up great, a wire got ripped out the back when i was stripping the interior. i replaces it with a new one from best buy, a mp3 jvc one, paid like 200 out the door with that extra insurance crap and have been trying to break it now for a couple months and it wont, it gets rained on all the time and puts up with it

ditto x2 i already do this to 3 of my vehicles.
Wont bring another cd on the trail, the cd's get scratched from bouncing in the truck and the dust in the air ruins them also.

I have a Kenwood tape deck matched with a 10 disc cd changer. I traded my chain link fence for it with my old neighbor back in 2000. It was used, but it still works great to this day. :D

what is this cd you speak of? I have all the great tunes I can remember in my head while i'm wheeling.

woudnt it kill your amp running high output into a low input (MP3 straight into amp) ??

Ive got a Sony Xplod MP30. Its a few years old, but very functional looking, plays CD, CD-R, CD-RW, and hasonly skipped once in its life (big pothole while doing 40+). Never skips offroad. My friend told me I should make a video and send it to Sony, telling 'em how good its antiskip works

no, take a headphone jack with built in rca connection cord and plug the rca end and plug that directly into the amp's left and right ports, then take the headphone side of the cord and plug that into your player. Put the line level input at the amp on 50%. Use the volume on the mp3/ipod player. Very easy and hidden, i live in the ghetto and im tired of stuff getting stolen. BTW, mount it high up in the cab unless you dont go through deep mud or water.

Eclipse cd-5441, Love it, never skips, no matter how hard of a bump you hit. Kinda pricey though since its a competition level cd player, has really cool features.

not at all, the player doesnt produce a high signal. the only "problem" with this setup is the EQ and stuff you get with a deck. most portibles are limited in this area. and x2 on being tired of stuff being jacked. its happened twice this year to me.
