I just pulled a large cast iron manual transmission out of a 2003 Dodge Ram one ton 4x4. What is it? NV6500? How do I take it apart?

Martin

It's an NV5600. Everything comes out the front. Heavy son of a bitch.

Or a w56. Pretty sure there were a couple fuzzy years where it could have either. Just in case you come up empty.

I think you mean G56. The G56 is aluminum or magnesium, I've got on in my '06.

a boat anchor?:D

In 03 you could get either the NV4500 or the NV5600 behind the Cummins. The G56 didn't come out until the 06 models.

It's a six speed right ?

I would definitely hang onto it,,, I bet you could sell it for about 3K....

I know the six speed in my 07 dodge dually is a big mofo.....and from what I hear it would be over 4K to rebuild it.... :eek1::eek1:

That is a heavy and expensive unit. Parts are kind of hard to come by due to the short life span that trans enjoyed in production making them quite valuable as a used trans if somebody needs one. Most remans are in the $3500-$4000 range...:eek1:

No, I have to put it back in.....

The rear bearing is seized on the output shaft. I'm a little Leary about pulling all if the shifter forks off and checking the front bearings.

The dampner on the slip yoke had spun free. Can't find a new one. The guy at the driveline shop is telling me the dampner is unnecessary. Is he right, or talking out of his ass???

Martin

We don't go back with the damper when we have the yokes replaced, no problems with that.

Well then that made the job simpler. I assumed it had something to do with the rear output bearing seizing up.
