What do you guy\'s use to seal your headers with? (Gasket)

I am tired of my headers leaking...
I tried the copper ones... 35 bucks later they still blow around the mating surface on the block and header flange...

Tried the cheap paper ones, same thing....

What gives...

Anyone try the aluminum ones?

There headman headers...

I have Heddman's, used the paper ones they came with and they've been sealed for 4 years. I'd pull the headers and make sure the flange isn't warped before anything else.

Re: What do you guy\'s use to seal your headers with? (Gasket)

I heard from someone to buy 2 sets of regular exhaust manifold gaskets, and double them up. I've done it on two motors so far, and they never leaked.

Re: What do you guy\'s use to seal your headers with? (Gasket)

hmmm... do they make differetn (round and oblong) header gaskets?

I think I used oblong ones....

Re: What do you guy\'s use to seal your headers with? (Gasket)

Forget all that stuff and take a sawsall and cut the flanges. For example on the even bank (2-4-6-8) cut the flange between #2 and #4 tube and then cut between #6 and #8 tube. Now you don't have to worry about the flange warping cause it can't /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif. Just one simple slice will do the job.

try filliing bothe surfaces and making shure they are clean and smooth.

Re: What do you guy\'s use to seal your headers with? (Gasket)

I use the stock gaskets. You can put in all your header bolts then slide in the gasket. They work just fine. If you are talking about the collector, mine leak bad, but I heard this deal called header hush works killer.

Re: What do you guy\'s use to seal your headers with? (Gasket)

I used the aluminum ones on the 406, they worked great..........and aluminum dead soft ones on the collector with header hush flanges............finally had no leaks. Definitely the biggest pain in the rear with headers. Almost not worth having them............. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I've always used the stock ehaust manifold gaskets too...never had a leak up top. Dead soft AL collector gaskets with lock nuts at the collector.

A trick I learned for headers on a SBC is too cut a small chunck out of the flang between 1 and 3 aswell as 4 and 7 on the left . For the right 2 and 4 , 6 and 8. It lets everything flex and seal better. I usely use Mr. Gasket Ultraseal.

Re: What do you guy\'s use to seal your headers with? (Gasket) call me stupi

on my '73 I'm hanging dynomax(?) headers I got new from a buddy. At the collector to tailpipe (botom of headers) I was told to use the lil paper gasket that Came with the tailpipe half of the connection. Aint no way in he!! that seals that connection, they don't even make contact. SHould there be a doughnut in that connection also? SOmeone please splain to me and try not to make me feel to stupid. Was considering grinding the collector down but then there would be noting to stop the 3 hole flange from sliding off, also been tempted to just weld em up and let it go. While on the subject of headers the one on my passenger side hits one of the bolts on the leaf spring, try as I may cant seem to get everything to twist right to clear it, everything seems to line up and bolt up well except for the t-case adapter not pulling down to the crossmember. etc etc etc. Hopefully this will all be worth the headaches, wish I hadn't rolled my '75

Re: What do you guy\'s use to seal your headers with? (Gasket) call me stupi

Do you need new engine mounts? I noticed my drivers side header had been hitting the spring clamp when the tire stuffs up. My engine mounts were totally shot and the engine had twisted in the frame quite a bit. Dropped some new poly mounts in and everything clears again.

Re: What do you guy\'s use to seal your headers with? (Gasket) call me stupi

If there leaking from the collector, I recommened cutting the collector off and welding a pipe to it. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif That's what I did. I was going to get the Headerhush but I did not want to ever have to deal with leaking collectors. /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif

i use percy's dead soft aluminum collector gaskets. they work great, just make sure the flanges are flat.

I'll second the percy's dead soft aluminum collector, and also give a nod to their header flange gaskets.

Re: What do you guy\'s use to seal your headers with? (Gasket)

I'll 3rd the Percy's aluminum gaskets! They have been on my truck for about 2 years with no leaks!

Re: What do you guy\'s use to seal your headers with? (Gasket)

I have been having the same problem, and I also have Heddmen Headers. I am pretty sure that it's leaking at
the collector but I have only tried the standard gaskets. What are these Percy gaskets and where can I find
them? Thanks -Flexy

Re: What do you guy\'s use to seal your headers with? (Gasket)

Check out Summit, I know they sell them.. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

They are made out of soft aluminum and are supposed to seal better.

Re: What do you guy\'s use to seal your headers with? (Gasket)

i get em at VIP and have seen them at pep boys. they run between 14 and 19 bucks, and come with new bolts, and its well worth it

Re: What do you guy\'s use to seal your headers with? (Gasket)

I'll throw in another vote for using the stock gaskets. I have used them for years and they work pretty darn good. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/burb.gif
