i have a 1983 chevy scottsdale right now i have a holley 4160 600cfm carb i was thinking of getting a new one any recommendations

thinking of getting a new what? Truck? 83 scottsdale? Carb?

Go with a Q-Jet - cheap, reliable, and good economy.

info on the engine you have will be usefull, i dont think a q-jet is the cheapest option IMO

I have an Edelbrock 1406 and it's treated me well. I've got it tuned to where it consistently gets me 10 mpg around town and 12 mpg on the highway. I'm running 35's, 4" lift and 3.73's with a TH350. Mild 350.

But I've been told that Q-jets do a much better job metering the fuel, especially offroad. Edelbrock does make an offroad carb though!

they also make a offroad spring float kit too...i think it 10-15 bux outat the summit mag..

Off Road it's Edelsuck...even with the spring loaded needle and seat kit. It's just a sh1t carb for anything other than street. If you have to have a carb off road the Q-jet is impossible to beat, plus with the tiny primaries it'll do better on fuel economy than either the Edlebrock or Holley.

look up and call I5 carb in california, I have bought a remanufactured q-jet from them as have others on here, they are very highly recommended on alot of car restoration websites and they know their stuff.

I called them, gave them my specs and it ran perfect out of the box, same story for many others

There is no better carburetor for a truck than the Quadrajet, period.

Street, wheeling, whatever, it's the best.

I averaged 12-15 mpg with my K5 when it was my DD (383 CID V8, 5200 lbs, SM465/205, D60/14 bolt, 4.56 gears, 4" lift on 37's). It ran ~3000 RPM at 70 MPH which is pretty high RPM for a V8 and still got reasonable mileage because of the carburetor. I spent quite a bit of time/effort with an O2 sensor to tune the motor.

There are tons of people out there who buy Edelbrock and Holley carburetors because they "work out of the box". They don't. Nothing does. Every motor is different; altitude, cam, heads, intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, etc. change the air/fuel requirements of a motor. Every carburetor has to be tuned to its individual motor or it won't deliver air/fuel correctly.

You'll hear about tons of people with aftermarket carb equipped K5's getting 6-10 mpg, its largely because their carburetors aren't tuned right. You simply can't bolt on a carb and expect it to work correctly.

Exactly, I have an Edelbrock 1406 (600cfm) on my new 350 and I'm getting 7-8mpg since it hasn't been tuned at all. Hopefully I'll get at least 10 out of it eventually...:doah:
