Is there anything special about my big block ?

pass means it came in a passinger car, hi perf means it was probably in a SS or some sort of other performance package.

Doesnt really mean much of anything since its now in a heavy 4x4.

Doesnt mean anything ?, hmmmmm ever driven a blazer with a big block.. Thanks tho.

I think the point is that it doesn't really mean much outside of the original car it was installed in. Most high performance engines in cars made power higher in the RPM band than a typical truck ever sees, so there is usually no benefit other than the increased displacement. Unless you are racing the truck, the high perf stamp isn't going to really have any benefit. Plus, that engine isn't stock anymore, so that means even less to anyone not trying to restore an old SS or other high performance car that the engine would have been in.

And, just to make it clear, I have driven a Blazer with a 454, and I don't think it is worth the increased fuel consumption. It sure is nice getting 12-13 MPG, instead of 6 with a big block.

then again, gas is probably 23 cents a gallon in Bahrain.... :haha:

I've seen "pass high perf" on literally all BBC's. Even the trucks, too.

I've got the original '83 engine from a K30 and it says same thing. Even see these castings on 396, 402, 427's also.
The tall deck 366 and 427 have something else casted on the block. I think something along the lines of "tall deck" but not sure. Been too long I saw one.

My '84 454 came from a truck and that has the same casting. I believe it was the original motor.:dunno:

As far as I know, all short deck big blocks have that cast into them.

Correct :wink1: Honestly, it doesn't mean anything because they've all got it.

"TRUCK" :thumb:

Yes I have drove a k5 with a 454, also a k10 shot bed with a 454 and a c10 short bed with a supercharged 427,(now that truck was a hoot to drive).

My own blazers though have all been small blocks with the exeption of the 2 that had 6.2 diesels. Im not actually a fan of big blocks, dont get me wrong they can be fun just not for me. I dont even build very high performance into the small blocks that I have rebuilt for 4x4's. Somewhere around 350-400 horse power does everything I need, and keeps the reliability high.

Its a mute point now because others who know more than I do have pointed out that all big blocks have that casting. But the point was if it was special its only special in its original vehicle. Im sure its been rebuilt and I know the blazer isnt the original vehicle. So the casting doesnt mean anything be it words or numbers.

I think I have a 396 in the shop with a "TRUCK" stamp on it. Not sure why I still have it... I think it's rusted beyond repair.:(

All big blocks are labeled high performance because they all are.. Pass is passenger vehicle, Ive seen the pass on burban/k20 454s also.. The tall deck motors from dump trucks are labeled Truck...

Not all BBC had that stamping but most did. It also didn't matter if it was a car or truck either. I have also seen a few that said "truck" like someone else here has said. The only real true valuable block is the rare hard to find 66 396 that had the huge 1" oil galley hole on the driverside just above the oil filter.

Every big block I've had said the same thing. Only true high perf block is a 4 bolt 454 block, they are worth a chunk around here at least. They also have that big oil port above the filter...

Ever try to find a 4 bolt main 427 block?

They have either been cracked or restorers want 4-5K for them.

id say a factory ZL-1 aluminum block would be worth a couple of bucks.....but thats just me.....

not all big block heads are the same, LS6 heads had massive ports in them (think chevy version of 429 cobra jet heads)......
