what engine should I go with in my next rig...

This is what I get for reading books... : )

In the Chev Engine book I was just reading (not at home, no title) the author was stating that the 400, as designed, is not a very good motor. Something about the stroke and bore, that too much of the energy is wasted on the cylinder wall, and it tends to wear them out relatively quickly. He even went on to state I believe, that GM was getting them back under warranty early in the 80's, that were already worn out. He stated, using the rod/bore idea, that the 383 is superior in at least the longevity department.

FWIW. I'd stick with a 350 if mileage was a concern, and if not, a 454.

No anti-theft measures on your truck? No pity when its stolen

Go for a Caddy big block. 472 or 500, take your flavour. You're going to a TH400, and you can find 'em easy with a BOP bellhousing.

We are talking approx. 425-450 ft-lbs @ about 4 grand! Not too shabby for a SBC.

Yup Dorian... good point... the 400 blocks did have some probs, especially the early 70's Chevrolet blocks. The later castings had more material and are a much better start. Personally I would get a new block from one of the many sources if I was going to undertake the project, but have seen numerous 406's built to the guns for street rods and pretty much no hassles as long as the compression is down, the builder measured his clearences and it was together right (like any motor), and as long as it wasn't overheated (again like any motor)
