Tanks in question are the 20 gallon side tanks of a 73-87 pickup.
The sock on my old one is pretty nasty and so I was gonna replace it, but the one I got from some Craigslist tanks looks different:
Top: the unknown weird one / bottom: the existing one.

In addition to the float on the rheostat for the sender, there's another sender circuit, looks like, in a plastic box. It has a round tube that extends down into the fuel...
... and then has a separate nipple up top:
Anybody know if this is some doofball aftermarket thing, or if it's intended for diesel, or ... well, can I use it for a gasser and call it good?
You'll note they're both the three-outlet type, i.e. feed, return, vent, for what that's worth.
