Tanks in question are the 20 gallon side tanks of a 73-87 pickup.

The sock on my old one is pretty nasty and so I was gonna replace it, but the one I got from some Craigslist tanks looks different:

Top: the unknown weird one / bottom: the existing one.

Here's another view of the weird one:

In addition to the float on the rheostat for the sender, there's another sender circuit, looks like, in a plastic box. It has a round tube that extends down into the fuel...

... and then has a separate nipple up top:

Anybody know if this is some doofball aftermarket thing, or if it's intended for diesel, or ... well, can I use it for a gasser and call it good?

You'll note they're both the three-outlet type, i.e. feed, return, vent, for what that's worth.

water in fuel sender for diesel if I am guessing right

just checked napa site and pics listed for 6.2 motor show the style you got stuck with .

did you even check for new at local store ? buddy just got carb style 3 hose driver side for 55ish at autozone.

That would 'splain it. The only diesel I've had was an M1009 CUCV so it just had the one tank.

The Autozone and Oreilly's local don't stock the senders, so I dug these out of the shed.

My local speedshop doesn't have them either but can have one for me in a day or two, so I'll go that route. Dropping the tank is a big enough PITA I don't want to do it twice.

Yeah, thats a diesel one--has the water sensor and siphon tube to drain the water out via the factory drain valve ..its not a cheap one to buy new..probably could use it on gas as well as diesel...
