what gears is everyone running I'm trying to decide?

Re: what gears is everyone running I\'m trying to decide?

I ran 3.73s and 32s for years with a weak, tired 305 and a 700R4. Combo worked okay as a daily driver. When I went to 35s (with the same gears), I couldn't use OD on the highway anymore. The constant downshifting and lack of power was threatening to burn up the tranny. But it worked fine in D. I recently installed 4.56s. With a 305 and 700 and 35s, this is an excellent combo. I would even recommend going all the way to 4.88s. But, since you don't have OD, you would probably be better to stick with 4.56s or 4.10/11s.

Re: what gears is everyone running I\'m trying to decide?

I'm running 4.88 with 37" tires. I would probably stick with 4.88 up to 42". And I would probably use 4.11 if I went smaller than 37"

I actually havn't been on the freeway yet. But I figured it out a while ago. It should be 3100 at 70 MPH. And 2200 at 50 MPH.

5.13s with 42"ers in the dually.
4.10s with 35"ers in the '60 Sub.
4.56 with 35"ers in the wife's '90 Sub (no OD) way too many R's.
4.56 with 39.5"ers in the '77 Sub, good combo with the 454.

running 4.10 gears. So far they work great. my k5 is my only driver so i use it for everything and the 4.10's work great IMHO

I'm with 77Chev. Doubler isn't going to cost much more than having gears done and it gives you more options.

You'd also have to switch to 7.48 gears to get the same reduction.

Not to mention the difference between 3.73 and 4.11 will only show up in your wallet.

I'm running 4.11's with 33's, and a 700R4 and its got some nice acceleration...haven't really gotten used to it yet, but I'm sure I'll like it a lot....

Re: what gears is everyone running I\'m trying to decide?

I think overall you would be better off putting a Doubler in it and leaving the diffs alone. Double the offroad gearing and still fly on the highway.
Basically, I like to see the diff gears set up to handle the on-road chores, then get deep t-case gears to do the offroad stuff.
If you have an OD trans, you get the best of all worlds since you can easily run a 4.56 to 5.13 gear in the axle, and have a 3:1 first gear. Add a Doubler to that and you're going to be really happy on the trail!

No, the ORD Doubler, mates a 203 low range box with a 205.

Re: what gears is everyone running I\'m trying to decide?

that's pretty cool I already have the NP203 case on the truck. So the same rear driveshaft can be used.

Re: what gears is everyone running I\'m trying to decide?

Is your daily drive a high-speed affair or is just around town? If you are doing an hour at 60 MPH I would leave it alone for now. If it is just 10 min & around the block go for the 4.56s. When I had 30 min of stop and go with nothing faster that 60 MPH the 4.56s were great. New job & now its an hour of 75 MPH. Big time gas bills and lots of noise. It is no longer my daily driver because of this.
On the trail, it was night and day. I will never go back to highway gears on a truck with even moderate OHV use. Hell, my Grand Cherokee has 3.73s & 29" tires.

Re: what gears is everyone running I\'m trying to decide?

Stephen,

Keep in mind that it really depends on what kind of offroading you do. I do mud and trails, and anything more than the reduction I have (3.06:1 first, 2.61:1 low, and 4.10 gears) would be totally useless. In fact, I usually am in 4 high when offroad unless the mud gets really deep, then I'm in 3rd gear in the tranny, low in the transfer. I am swapping in an SM 465/NP 205, but for now, I have the 700R4/NP 208 in my truck. I will have to test how that setup works in the mud for me. The 700R4 works very well though. Low first to get you rolling, then upshifts for more wheelspeed.

Re: what gears is everyone running I\'m trying to decide?

I like to play in mud but I usually just run trails I don't do the big rock crawling yet becuase I dont have lockers. I still have a 10 bolt front and 12 bolt rear both corporates. I'm looking for a dana 60 for the rear and heavy duty dana 44 for the front then I'll get the lockers.
