Does that price include the R&P? I got a quote of $800 to do just the install both axles.

That's why I went with an axle swap to get the gears I wanted.

P.S. Don't know the answer to the carrier question.

The price included parts and labor. Is this stupid to do to the 1/2 ton axles? Should I just wait and swap in 3/4 or 1 ton axles instead? I know it would cost more, but I would like to do it right. What kind of $$ are we talkin' for a modest axle swap? I am worried that I'm tearing up the trans driving around with the stock gears. Will I be doing damage driving it like it is?

What kind of axles are you running. I had 10 bolts in my 91 blazer with 3.42's. When I switched to 4.88's I did not have to swap carriers. I think they were thicker gears.

I'm sure it's just the 10-bolt front and rear. Not absolutely positive, but I'm sure pretty sure it is just the stock setup.

on the 10 bolts there is only 1 carrier on the trucks, 2.73 and up.

i have 3.42 in mine with 35s and in D i like the power. at 65 it turning at about 2000. to get the same power i would have to put 4.88s in it.

if your spinning 2000 rpms in D at 65 then OD is practically useless til about 80, by then the stock motor doesnt have enough balls to pull those gears.

the tranny should you spoke to doesnt know what they are talking about or are thinking about car axles maybe. no carrier change for trucks.

I've got the same set-up as you, except mine is a '87 with a 305 that has TBI. It works pretty well considering the 305. aA 350 or larger would be MUCH better.

actually im spinning 2000 rpm at 60 in D /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif i don't have the money to regear yet. yes at 80 i don't have enouhg power to maintain the the speed in OD, thats why im running in D all the time till i regear.

Do you know what your gear ratio is now? Many came from the factory with 3.08s. If that is the case, even 4.10s will seem like a big improvement. Since you aren't /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif going to wheel it hard and you want to keep costs down just go with the 4.10s. If you ever want bigger tires or start wheeling it harder it would require higher gearing and the best way then would probably be a complete axle swap! Good luck and Keep-on-wheelin.

i think you should go with 4.88s. I have 4.56s with a 350/700r4 and I run 35" tires and in OD it seems like the RPMs are a little low when Im cruising on the freeway. Granted, I tend to not drive toooo fast, but still... a bit lower would be perfect. I wheel my rig with 39.5s, so I'm going 5.13 when $ allows it... but if I didnt have the big meats, and I had it to do all over again, I'd go 4.88.

Since no one else said it I will...honestly if you are thinking of dropping over a grand on regearing I would seriously consider a 3/4 ton upgrade. I waited and watched the local traders guides and snagged a '77 K20 with 4.10s for $400. Even if you have to drop another $400 into freshening up the axles you'll still be under a grand and have a stronger drivetrain. If you're lucky you can get a rolling chassis parts truck and get away with nothing more than new brake shoes. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif
