usually it's deflection that causes that kinda thing. i suppose them not being set up right could do the same thing, but i dont really have experience with that. but yeah you more or less took the diff to its limits. is it stock? 10 bolt front right? and like iwaxmyjimmy pointed out, it's possible that your gear mud contributed to it as well hehe.

:wink1:

its a 8lug 10b. guess my friend needs a 10b crap..... Not sure what it is no oil come out at all when i poped the cover

damn i didnt notice that its on almost every tooth, yikes. no oil coming out when u pop the cover is not a good sign

tell him to get the axle acid tanked and rebuild it completely(new gears and carrier) only way to get all that gunk out.

or buy a d60 for the same price;)

The oil just looks nasty. I would guess that contributed.
I had a 12b rear do something similar. My guess is small amounts of contaminant got smashed between ring and pinion creating a stress point creating a crack and then failure.

...after close look all the teeth are broken the same, like the stress was on the end of each, like maybe not set up right, or perhaps due to lack of oil, wear caused the backlash to change.... or something.

just looked at it a again. the pinon bearing is gone, nothing left to it at all. i am sure that helped also, i dont think my friend wants to spend the cash on a 60.

The pinion bearing probably crapped out and allowed the pinion to deflect, causing the ring gear failure. FWIW, I stipped the teeth completely off the ring gear and pinion on a REAR 10b- open on 285's. With a 305.

if the pinion is salvagable I have a brand new ring gear unopened in its plastic wrap. I also have the pinion but the threads on the end are slightly buggared. I was thinking I'd just scrap it because what good is a ring gear without a pinion?

Can't do that. Gears are machines as a set. Mixing them would just add to the trouble.
