What headers are you running in your rig?

Hi folks. I searched around a while on this topic but decided to take a vote instead.
What headers should I run on an 86 K5 with a 350? I read where one guy was having wire burn issues and another was breaking a plug off. What do ya think, Hedman, Hooker, Jegs, what?

Your going to get a lot of personal preferences on this topic. I personally run hooker shorties.

Are you running smog? If so, I just put in a new engine in my burb. I'm running Edelbrock shorty headers with the air injection ports. Part number 65273 from summit. They have the TI-Tech coated material. I like them. I personaly don't think they give me any more power, but I needed new manifolds anyways. For $100.00 more, I chose the headers. They look good and don't leak, so far. 400mi. since new motor installed. Hope this helps.

I had Flowtech headers before, they sucked.

I replaced them with Hedman #69230, they're great, tuck up much higher and they fit perfectly including clearing my mechanical clutch linkage.

With most SBC headers (even ones that claim to fit trucks) you'll have issues with the shackle/shackle bolt hitting the flange on the headers.

I like Hooker super comp long tube 1 5/8.The 1 3/4 can be a pita getting to the header bolts. They got thick flanges and the tubes come off the heads far enough to clear the plug boots without melting them.I also run short plugs and angle plug heads for more clearance.

Cheep hedmans I think ,they dont leek but I had to take a punch and dent a tube or two to get the plugs out. They are on a 350. I had a set on a 454 that I thought fit nice.

I run Thorley Tri-Y headers. They are high quality and fit well due to their design.

I'm running some long tubes, probobly Hedman. I have no probs with wires or plug access but I had to remove the pinion bump stop on the pass side. On my 2wd I have Flowtechs, I used the copper gaskets on that one...well worth the money IMHO

My cheap hedman tork steps, have this problem bad.

I tried wedging a 2x4 between the collector and the shackle, and running the motor to get the headers hot... :haha: it did not work...

BEfore that, i had JBA shorties... and the header bolts were a huge pain in the ass...

L&L products; they make em for SBC too:

smog vs. no smog
kinda narrows the choices
I have, still in the box, Edelbrock shorties that will be going in

what a loaded question....... :wink1: how much are you willing to spend? :haha:

Hooker and hedmann make a good bargain header.... Thorley's are really sweet, but pricier....

I'm buying L & L's too.. again pricey, but pretty bomb-proof #'s.....

Ive got hedman elites on the sbc. They work pretty good, ball and socket style. My big block had hookers on it...

I've got hedman elites, and I'd go with something else. I had some leak issues, but Percy's Deadsoft metal gaskets fixed that. But I also bump into the shackle bolt on the drivers side, which is why I would change. I've had some issues burning through a plug wire on long trips, even with high-heat boot sleeves, so I keep some extra wires around for long trips.

The extra power is nice, but they've been a minor pain in the neck, and the noise of the header hitting the shackle bolt gets old...

ive had the flowtech headers for like 10 years.still runnin strong with no problems.i have the long tube headers so they are close to th shackle but dont hit not that i reversed the bolts so the nut is torward the outside of the frame.they were only 125 bucks too.

I have been running the headmans for about six months and have not had any leaking issues yet. I also didnt have any clearance problems with the shackle. They do make a couple spark plugs a real pain to get to.
