What in the heck happen to the square body prices

Prices will start coming down soon with the economy slowing, guys with project vehicles will need to unload them to pay bills. The same thing happens with guns and motorcycles, and those that have a strong financial situation can get some good deals.
Not holding my breath on this. People will likely hold onto their junk and wait out the ride hoping for everything to go back up again. By the time that happens, and if it does, and when it does, they may be dead from old age. The truck will likely be rotted out by then.

People that are hit hard by this won't be holding on to their crap.
Not wanting to make this into a political thread, or a covid-19 thread. But he's right. Lots of people will be parting with their toys. All kinds of stuff will be popping up before this over. Guns, atvs, jet skis, boats, snowmobiles, classic cars, you name it.
This will be worse then 2008-09.

I've seen many "hoards" of square bodies and Jeeps, other "projects" on FB marketplace in recent days...one guy has about 20 old Jeeps,Wagoneers,CJ's Gladiator pickups ,stashed in his yard..
Typical New England clunkers though, with some rot.

Most of the square bodies need "everything" though, but come with most of the needed parts..no prices listed either though..most ads say "moving, cant take them with me"...many "free" motor homes too, that sat forever, some with BBC & mopar 440's..need a semi flatbed to move them though..

I agree that there will be some.
Some are already strapped and if they don't get help or back to work soon they will start letting go

Some will hold off longer and they might get more desperate by the time they realize they have to let go.
Thankfully I am not in this position, I can wait for another peak and by then I'll know more what I want to keep.

I agree here for the most part as this pertains mostly to those without jobs. I still browse several different sites and have yet to see any changes on prices. Call it what you want but I'm always on the lookout for that screaming deal. Just like the rest of us. I'd like to see the K30 costs go down. Been a little ridiculous for the past several years.

There will be a lag. It is way too soon in the pandemic.

It's entirely possible that we come out of this with minimal harm, but with each passing day that's looking less and less likely. Things are tough immediately for some people now, but the real lag won't be seen for months yet.

It's the same reason you can't get a good deal at a pawn shop anymore....you have a phone, they have a phone....

That said, the prices on these will start coming down when us old guys are too old to drive them...15 or 20 years and the bottom will drop out. The young ones today largely don't care about cars or trucks. The bottom is dropping out of anything earlier than 1967...fast. These squarebodies are really just a blip in the market. rise and fall...I figure when I'm too old to get into mine without a small step ladder...it will be over. my 2 cents. It really is all about reliving your youth and nostalgia.

Seem like over night everyone here on the west coast thinks that the things are made of gold or something.
i know what people are asking and what they are selling is completely different but damn.
a 90 k5 with salvage title and needing work for $10k you got to be kidding me.
heaven forbid you look at a shortbed 2wd truck

glad i have a few of them i would hate to have to go buy one right now

2/3 of the country is sitting on their ass living it up on upside down government spending of money we don't have and will never have.

All due to the Ludicrous overreaction to corona virus.

All the overpriced shit for sale is going to flip in the other direction real quick when the gov gravy train comes to it's inevitable end.

And people are going to be selling anything and everything they own to keep a roof over their head, lights on and food on the table.

the real zombie apocalypse is what happens when the upsidedown government spending causes the economy to go down for the final count as in the history of the world has always happened 100% of the time...
Weimar Republic and many others are prime examples of what's to come... anarchy and decades of civil war when people can't buy anything to eat for any amount of money...

And this time it's happening planet wide, there's no place anyone can go to improve their situation and no one that can bail us out.

No toilet paper is the least of our worries.

I hope it don't happen, but the drunken sailor spending by democrats & republicans federally & locally right now and their peers around the world can not end well.

100% agree.
I just hope it happens before I die.
I am preparing my kids but I would rather guide them through it than just teach them and die.
Although I am not looking forward to another life of war, 25 years was enough for me.

"Alexa, how much is a rusty 1982 k5 blazer worth?"

"A 1982 blazer sold on barett jackson for $32,000"

"Cool, that's how much I'll ask for in the ad":D
Applies to Blazer Chalets as well. Plus, another good question to ask is if the actual big dollar sales are legit. Chalet #1741 went from dealer/flipper to dealer/flipper a couple of years ago barely worth its initial $7k legit daily driver price, with ever-increasing asking prices with each new seller for zero improvements to it apart from new tires and a wax job. Last I heard, it sold to some hapless dolt for $17k or more, still not even close to factory showroom new collector value. Chalet #1683 sat unsold for years at a dealer/flipper's lot for $16k because it flat out was not worth that much to savvy buyers. And not for lack of the guy trying to sell it either. Plop it into a Mecum auction, and it sells in an instant for over $19k, and subsequently gets hyped in a slick internet article by the next dealer/flipper, where a subsequent followup article claims it sold for just under $30k. All of that with zero restoration improvement beyond a super wax job since the first time it appeared for $8k in the first flipper's Craigslist ad in 2010. I could go on and on with these things. Tell-tale sign of something not right is that not a single one of the mega-dollar buyers of Chalets has made the effort to contact me through the BlazerChalet website to learn more about their rig. Not. One. Meanwhile, I see more and more of the ignorant barn find sellers who've done no more than 10 minutes' worth of Google searching asking outrageous prices for rigs with so much rust in them that the trucks are not likely even salvageable.

This problem isn't new. But in most cases the problem would solve itself if people simply stopped overpaying. But often enough folks are willing to pay, so buyers raise their prices. Other buyers hear about it, and they want to join the game. It's a cycle.

The overvaluation of squarebodies is one reason I sold 2 of mine. The 2 of them brought enough money to start 8 or 10 cheap vehicle projects. I consider that to be a good trade. They were mostly sitting anyways...

I am working on that.
Offloading 2 squares and financing the rest of my projects

The funny part is that 2 years later I still haven't gotten around to buying another project car. It's just retirement money at this point. If & when I buy back into the old car market, it'll be for something cheaper. Why overpay for a project? :dunno:

I have noticed that many (most?) non-restored cars more than 40 years old are cheaper than 30-40 year old "classics." Must be nostalgia dying off after enough time?

Then again, in 40-50 years, it's going to be like Model-A's, where almost no one grew up with them and they hold no nostalgia, and thus value will probably be minimal.

Nostalgia is funny stuff. A 1985 4-door Cavalier has basically zero fan club. It never was a cool car. Google doesn't even have many good pictures of one. And yet, since I drove one early in my driving career, I would smile if I ever passed one on the road. Not because it's a particularly noteworthy car, just because I happen to have history with it. If I was somehow forced to buy some low-end 1980s econobox (:doah:), why wouldn't I buy the one that carries some warm feelings with it? Left-handed shifting was fun, and I never get to do that anymore.

The nostalgia adds a bit of value to an otherwise worthless car.

my dad drove a wagon of this model and she was a tank . the car was loaded up and beefed up the best possible with parts at the time . he was a field service repair man and had about anything he needed in that wagon . she was painted white and she just cruised all over upstate new york and upper pa .

I hope it happens in the next 10 years while I’m still able enough to help form the new country and keep the demons at bay.

Try buying even a rotted to death 60-66 GM 4x4 or a 55-57 GM pickup around here for less than 4 grand--its dam near impossible, especially it it still runs and drives--or will with minimal work..

I see a 67-72 GM 4x4 pop up for less every so often..that white '69 K20 I posted in the craigslist thread still hasn't sold, the price is $2000 "firm",and it only has a wooden flat bed--but its in decent condition for its ago and has a rare 292/SM420 setup and "can be driven home "..
