What is stronger? 5:38 thick or standard?

Cool running, reliable LS with 4L80 is a plan for this truck.
Why not, already did it in my '68. Hopefully (and I haven't done the calculator yet) but the deeper 5.38s will help with the 4L80's taller first gear.
Hydroboost and fixing my brakes comes before twin cases, it's hard enough to stop in single 4L already
 
I agree, brakes are not right or vacuum is low or booster is not happy...

Your putting an all aluminum small block in there...that should help in the power dept.
 
all i can say is once you go hydroboost you will never go back to vac

need the brake pedal and hanger bracket / hydroboost unit / master for the current brake setup on the axles ( ex: dana 60 and 13" drum or 10bolt and stock drum ) . .not 100% but best to get hydroboost 3rd line p/s pump for easy tie in to the now 3 hose system . and the 2 main high pressure lines and 1 extra long low pressure return line .
 
If your regularly breaking 5.38 pinion gears, you would be breaking 5.13 ones as well.

IMO, my 5.38s with 40s and beadlocks isn't great in high. Now that's a super heavy tire package, and I plan to go to 42s, so I'll probably be swapping to a 70 eventually.

One might think that , but it’s not the case . 5.38’s fail at a higher rate then other gearsets .

as for the Dana 70 thing , I know a few guys that have gone that route went all the way down to to 7.17’s . Guess what, they broke pinions too.

I run a 4.88’s with a SM465/241/205 . If I need lower gears I would go to Rockwell’s or axletech 4000’s or if I wanted to keep the the tons I would get some portal ends .
 
Expensive but man do they work , I’m sure everyone here has seen Fred Williams Alaska Army truck from the show Dirt Every Day , O got to see that truck work first hand and let me tell you I want those portals lol
