What is the weight difference between a 12 bolt & a 14 bolt

There is a big difference...i can pick up a complete 12bolt and carry it around. I CANT pick up a 14ff...tried my words were "sh*t" haha.

How hard is the conversion from 12 to 14? Any modifications necessary or direct bolt in?
What do you guys recommend up front opposite the 14?

I've obviously never done it but from what I've read its a direct bolt on fit. I know alot of guys are running the stock 10 bolt or Dana 44 up front. For an upgrade up front their using the Dana 60. They usually pull the 14FF & D60 off Chevy 1 tons.

a 1 ton 14b has different spring perches and shock tabs...assumeing this is a k5?

Its a direct bolt it, if your not changing yuor rear shaft you will need a hybrid u-joint...available at napa.

...I've been wheeling an FJ40 with a Detroit & never needed larger axles with it than the stock setup. ...

FJ40 axles are stronger than Chevy 1/2 ton stuff. Next to the axleshafts out of Claudia's '40, the 30-spline shafts from the D60FF under my K5 look almost small...:D

So are you trying to keep you current wheels and bolt pattern set up? Another option is the 9.5" 14 bolt. Not a bolt in but still note worthy, 33 spline shafts and 9.5" ring gear available in 6 or 8 lug.

If a person tried the 9" route, I would avoid Moser, imo. Strange and Mark Williams have both seemed to hold up better, but alas, the 14bff is still cheaper, easier, and replaceable at any City Market or Kroger parking lot.

Easy route up front is to convert your current 1/2 ton to 8 lug.

13-10 drive yokes are available for a 14ff if I aam not mistaken, so you can either use the napa joint or buy a new yoke.

Probably right, but sounds like "Nightmare at Blazer Bash" :D

I think you would be fine with the 12blt from the sounds of what you want to do. For a little extra security, alloy axle shafts are relatively inexpensive. When I bought some in '05 they ran about $220 from ORD.

A 14bFF is no were near 550lbs. my last set of 1tons I had to move a ways by hand.......no fun I'll tell you that BUT. The 14 can't weight more than 400lbs. The D60 front was well over 500 and felt every pound of it. I've never owned a 12 bolt or moved one, so I can't help you there.
D60 rears were semi float or full float depending on application. and the ford 9" is the king or rear diffs at the drag strip. you can buy 40 spline carriers new housings and the whole 9 yards, put 1500hp through it on slicks day after day after day.......

It's unsprung weight anyways. Probably better for off road
