What is this plug??

Riley, backup lights are controlled in the column at least until the computer controlled trannys, and maybe even for them. It is the combination neutral safety backup light switch at the bottom of the column. And none of the 700r4 tranny's I have worked on had that plug, although they did have a lockout converter plug, but it was a much simpler plug.

And T350's don't have them either, the reverse lights are still controlled by the switch in the column. I can confirm this by my T350 driven 1980 K5, there is no plug on the trans for the backup lights.

I have to agree that it was for a lockup convertor but i really don't remember unplugging it when I pulled the tranny. Either way the tranny i have doesn't have it.

I do remember the 87 i had that had the 700r4 had the 4 pronged one. Got rid of the lockup convertor in that tranny as well. Never knew 350 turbos had a lockup convertor though

Isn't that the back up switch plug for the manual trans. I think Chevy used one harness for both auto and manual trans trucks.

the 350 with the locking torque converter was called the THM350-C

The details from Wikipedia:
Around 1980 a lockup torque converter was introduced; this transmission was phased out in 1984 in GM passenger cars for the 700R4. Chevrolet/GMC trucks and vans used the THM350-C until 1986. The lockup torque converter was deemed unpopular with transmission builders - B&M Racing once marketed a conversion kit for THM350-Cs during the early 1980s

Who cares what the plug is for since it isn't hooked up and you can't figure out what it went to just cut it off and be done. :D

I've got the same plug dangling on my 85 getting melted on my headers. I'm trying to fix it up so I'd like to know what its for, cutting it off is not an option.

1. Replace melted plug with new weather pack connector.
2. Insert new plug into side of transmission.
3. ????
4. Profit! :D
