What is wrong with my Transmission?

depends on what you want done .

reman yours ? depends on time frame at his shop and parts needed .

just swap a trans with a remaned unit not to bad at all .
Yes swap for a reman use yours as a core. That's the only way you'll get it back, faster:waytogo:

If you have a K case make sure you get a K case. If yours is not a K case now is the time to make it so. Yeah a reman is the way to go, unless you need something unusual for a non stock t case or something

Ok, what's a K case?

The "K" case has the K on the passenger side of the bell housing. The K is the stronger case that is found mainly in 4x4 trucks. It has thicker bolt lugs at the bell housing bolt bosses. It also has more threaded holes drilled into the torque converter cover. The torque converter cover for the K case uses a thicker cast aluminum cover with 6 bolt holes instead of 4 and said to better strengthen that section of the case when the torque converter cover is bolted on. The 2wd or Non K case will use a thin tin cover over the torque converter and 4 smaller bolts.
K case 700r4s have also been used in S10s.

The K case also has provisions for the strut bars to the motor mounts
that provide more strength.

The local small town trans builder rebuilt my 700r4 for $900 with me doing the removal and installation and had it done the next day (dropped it off at noon, picked it up at noon the next day). He would have only charged a couple hundred $$ for the R&R and probably would of had it done by the end of the day instead of by noon....but I'm cheap and like doing as much work on my vehicles as possible.

A friend of mine had a bad experience with Monster transmissions that is similar to the stories you see on the net. He bought a 4L65 for his work van from them several years ago that was supposed to be the heavy duty towing version. He typically rebuilds his own transmissions and is the "go to" guy in our club to have this done, but this time the trans case was trashed and it seemed cheaper and easier to just buy a complete built trans vs. finding a junkyard case and then rebuilding it. That Monster heavy duty towing trans didn't get to 5,000 miles before slipping badly. Sure, Monster gives it a warranty but he would be responsible for pulling the trans and paying to ship it back, then Monster would "determine" if it actually was a warranty issue. Instead he pulled it apart himself and found many issues with it, including cheap parts and improper installation. After he rebuilt the trans it ran for years with no issues, including towing his off-road rig quite a bit.

Also not a fan of pulling junkyard trans....sometimes you luck out and sometimes you don't. I know some people who got a junkyard trans cheap and ran it for years with no problem, but I also know people who had 2-3 different junkyard trans installed before finding one that was good.

Its tough to get a "good one" for a later model truck especially ,from a salvage yard--most trucks here have 200+ thousand miles before they get junked ,and due to the many different electrical sensors and ECM's not being compatible sometimes, chances are even a good one may not act right or last long..some automatics go to seed sitting on a rack waiting to be sold too..

A few of the better salvage yards here will guarantee their used transmissions and even pay the labor costs if one has to be pulled back out before the warranty expires--some places even offer an extended warranty if your willing to pay extra for it..
Other yards, its your tough luck if it fails--they'll give you another one,but no reimbursement for the labor costs..

Sorry I came into this thread so late, I have not had much time to get on the site. If you haven't done so already, pull the governor cover and remove the governor and check to see if the gear isn't stripped off or apple core shaped. The other thing that can cause a lack of upshift from first would be a sticking 1-2 shift valve or sticking TV valve. Sometimes you can free up a TV valve by taking the end of the tv cable loose at the throttle and pulling smartly against it's stop repeatedly( 6 or more times). Reconnect the cable, check adjustment and test drive. If the governor is good, tv trick is fruitless, you can try manually shifting from first to second repeatedly to see if the 1-2 shift valve can be freed up. If all these fail you can pretty much be certain that you do not have a minor problem and will need rebuild or replacement to rectify this situation.

I was looking at Monster transmissions 700R4, its about 1,400. Im not happy to spend that much, but if it is going to be solid Im willing to pay. Is this the way to go or should I do a rebuild with a local shop? I am accepting a near total loss at this point.
I have never read a legitimate honest review of Monster Transmissions that was good. Please read up on them before ordering.

Monster has a great warrantee. Summitt is also around that price.
I'd go with monster transmission. I have had good luck with them.

Customers service is just like Off Road Design, unbelivably good.

You will not regret it!

and don't let the sweet voice of the girl that answers the phone full you, she knows her stuff, and follows thru with what she says.

Or you could have Greg built you a bullet proof trans and I believe he has a warranty too.

Well the decision has been made and the transmission rebuilt. I found a local shop that tore it down and rebuilt it was new parts. The 3rd and 4th belts were completely gone and a drum was cracked, the housing is fine and had them I had the transfer case resealed. I now have a 18,000 mile 18 month warranty. The trans feels great and is weird because it has always been bad. If I ever have more time and another vehicle I will probably get Greg to rebuild my next trans. Thank you all for your advice.

glad you got it covered . and funny how a good build fells weird over the last rebuilt that was never correct .

Later after finding the TV cable was not hooked up and then reattaching it, the 1st to 2nd would be long and wound out, only shifting if you let off the throttle or you hit 35 mph. ...... I now only have P,R,N,and D but only in 1st and am unable to manually select 2nd or D3. I checked the fluid when I got home and it looked like used oil.

The 3rd and 4th belts were completely gone and a drum was cracked,
The 700 only has one band, which is used for 2nd and 4th gear. If the drum is cracked, that would wreck the band. Whether the 3/4 clutch burned first or the band failed is debatable, but either one is likely caused by incorrect TV pressure. If the only problem was the band, it should be able to eventually shift from 1st-3rd. If the only problem was the 3/4 clutch, you would only have R, 1 and 2. However, with the fluid destroyed the transmission can do any number of weird things as valves begin to stick in the valve body. If you keep driving, this additional slipping causes more damage.

Not being able to manually select 2nd or 3rd.... are you saying you couldn't physically move the shifter or that the transmission just didn't respond in those positions?
