Well I'm trying to get ideas for a good rig and everyone I talk to says that the 700R4 is crap for trailing/offroading etc. So what you guys think? I'm curious.

:doah::doah::doah::doah::doah::doah::doah: How on gods green earth do you expect us to give you any advice when you didnt list your truck/specs and its use?

The 700 has some advantages and can be built very tough, it takes some know how on your part to keep it going for a long time. The TV cable adjustment springs to mind. Knowing when you trans is shifting in and out of overdrive and dropping it a gear to stop that. Using the latest parts that have proven to be stronger.

I personally use a th350, why? Cost, simplicity,efficiency, they are shorter than a 700 smaller and lighter than a 400 or a 700.

Unless you are running a very very beefy big block (like over 500 hp to the wheels) I really don't see the need for a 400 over a 350.

I have taken both apart and talked to alot of folks about these.

Most folks want a th 400 cause its strong. It is but its rarely needed. Kind of like using a Dana 60 with 35s, can you break it, yes, is it likely, no.

So I say th 350 simple and rugged, your going to need a doubler or something for gearing though. IMHO a 700 with a 241 is pretty darn good for gearing too.

I live out here in Az and mainly use it to hit back trails, see ghost towns and such with the occasional rock crawl to get to some places. It currently has a carbed 5.7 with no mods. I plan on going to 33 in tires and puttin some e-lockers in it once I sell my kidney.

I've been very happy wheeling with 700R4s in my K5 and my previous S-10 Blazer. Having the overdrive gear on the highway is great and the lower first gear combined with 4lo in the t-case is also a nice feature. Just make sure to gear the axles correctly to go with the tire size you use. A nice big trans cooler is key to longevity.

I have the 700R4/241TC combo and could not be happier with the all around performance and driveability both on and off road. As others have mentioned, a well built 700 will last a long time in this kind of service.

i vote with the rest of em then. I have a th350 in both my k5's and i really hate only having 3 gears personally. putting it in 4-low offroad makes it bearable but a lower 1st gear would be nice. Although the dependability of th350's/400's and the fact that they are so focking cheap does make them an attractive option. 700R4's can get pricey in a hurry which is why i havent gone with one personally.

I have a 700 in the 84 (1990 version) It cost me 1500 to get built but since I do everything with this truck I wanted to keep the od. It also has about every strength upgrade that anyone would do for a truck application. 700s have benefits and disadvantages but I have good luck and have even truck pulled it a time or 2.

The cost of a well built 700R4 is just a byproduct of this hobby. If you want to have your cake and eat it too, it's gonna cost ya. But it is well worth it.

I've had my TCI maximizer 700r4 behind my 454 (about 350hp) in a couple of trucks(K20 Sub and a K5). I have NO complaints about it at all. Originally bought for $1100 (well worth it) I see they're about $1900 in summit now:eek1: But considring thats what it would cost out the door for a stock rebuild at a reputable shop, Its really not too bad. As these guys mentioned the low 1st gear and the overdrive is defeinatly the selling feature of this trans.

I figure with converter, pan, shipping, etc, I'l have $2500 in mine... RMVB = full line pressure all the time = no tv cable

I'm gonna run a pressure gauge for it on my cowl...
