What locker to get?

Locker

Some of us just pass advice without the Italian seasoning. :haha:

*snort*

I also have decided to put an Ox cable locker in my front 10 bolt when I change over to 8 lug. I think with a detroit in back, and selectable up front, that should be just about perfect.

The 10 bolt Spartan I have is going in the rear for Blazer Bash, then just go away when I swap in the 14 bolt with your ring and pinion.

Ring? Pinion? Oh yeah, that ring & pinion.

So you're redoing the 10-bolt before BB? Why not just do the axle swap and be done with it rather than doing it twice?

After much waffling, and reading everything I can, I'm going with the detroit. If I hate it down the road, then I'll go to an ARB and end up on a thread like this passing sage advice. If I love it, well, I'll be on a thread like this passing sage advice. lol.

I think that's what I'm going to do also, 1400 for the whole thing at a shop w/new bearings a detroit sND 4.56 gears. If I hate it I'll let you guys know haha

No, all I'm doing for Blazer Bash is putting the lunchbox locker in, and running it with what I have. The 14 bolt, 8 lug 10 bolt conversion is a big deal, I'm doing crossover steering. need to get 8 lug wheels, all that. That stuff will be for BB 2017.

Look into the powertrax no-slip. It drops in like a Detroit. I've had mine for years and I like it. I've never had a Detroit, but I don't have much issue daily driving on mine. It locks up on acceleration, so it'll bark the tires while turning right if you hit the pedal, but it's fine under light throttle under sharp turns. Also, it doesn't ratchet and it hardly clunks. It performs well off road and I've had no issues on the highway either. I have limited experience on ice and snow though. I have always wanted an arb, but that price is hard to justify.

I bought my k5 with Detroit lockers. It was scary on snow and ice. I was advised to only lock one front hub in snow, vwhich helped a lot, but was still a stressful drive. If you're in 4wd on the trail and hit ices, it can be a little unnerving. My detroits allso made a horrible ping/slam sound going around corners that scared pedestrians.

The detroit lockers also had a lot of slop... Like 1/12 rotation. If I let off the gas when traffic slowed down it would slam. When I gave it gas it would slam again. It you steering box or frame have been compromised, then it's really hard to keep control when it slams. U-joints were all trashed too.

I switched to arb lockers and it drove like a normal truck again.

Yes you have the added expense of a compressor. But now I can air up on the trail. I splurged on a Thomas compressor and mounted a 5 gallon air tank above the rear axle, so I can run basic air tools on the trail too.

If I had to do it again, I would still go with the ARB solution. Otherwise, a rear Eaton locker would be my next choice.

Sadly, I threw a rod and she has sat unused for a year.

Had a no slip in a 97 shortbox. Once it got a few street miles it worked just as smooth as my eaton posi in the Beaumont.

I didn't think it was gonna be that smooth but it was.

Did you have full lockup? As in, one wheel is off the ground and you can still drive? I can't seem to get a straight answer from the guys that have run them, some folks are saying that it's just a partial torque biasing like a posi unit. :dunno:

If you're looking at a No-slip, these guys have them more cheaply than Summit.

Couldn't honestly tell you.

It was a 2wd lowered street truck :haha:

But it always left :burnout:

I've had hit or miss luck with lock rights, blown up 2 of them, everything spec'd out fine and both were warranted fwiw.

One was in a gm 8.2 rear and the other a d60 front. Replaced both of them with a full carrier replacement tradin device fwiw.

I still don't see why you wouldn't buy a used 14B FF military take out. What you want to build is exactly what they used and they're readily available for well under a $1K. Then you can recoup a few hundred from your 4.10 axle.

Yes, it will lock up even with one wheel in the air.

I agree. 14BFF axles are a dime a dozen (I paid $125 for one of mine and $100 for the other). CUCV axles with lockers are a smaller subset, but still easy to find for less than $1400. Over here you could buy a couple of matching sets of 1-ton axles for that kind of money.

Too bad those military axels here in cali are about 2000 or more. IF you can find them. I would go that route even if it was 2000 unless someone can find me a set! I'm taking the axel in tommorow for 4.56 and a detroit, if I hate it o well at least it will hookup haha plus I'll talk to the guy tgere a bit more

2000? I'm in CA and I have no idea where you get your pricing from. But hey, it's your cash.

I'm outside of sac. Pirate, Facebook classifieds groups. Hell, you can get them on eBay for half the cost you're saying.

By the time shipping, and more than likely having to rebuild them? All I want is a 60 for the front and i'd be set, I've got my perches set were they need to be idk if I want to go through that hassel...

Oh, and as far as I know, there wasn't a factory clutch style. There was the gov loc, which would require a different carrier. But it doesn't use clutches, some kind of centrifugal force doohicky.
FYI the gov-loc do use clutches.
The centrifugal doohicky effects a cam plate that increases the pressure on the clutches.

Thanks, I did not know that. I had a 12 bolt with a gov lock on my first Blazer. It actually worked fine, but if the internet existed back then I probably would have been scared to death of it. haha
