thinking about getting a 97-98 2wd 1/2 ton, which manual trannys did they have? NV3500 or 4500? Any way to tell between the two? thanks

I am not positive on the breakdown but the nv3500 would generally be found behind a 6 cyl rather than an 8. So I guess it mostly would have to do with the engine. Sometimes the 4x4 vs. 2wd has to do with it but my guess would be the 4500.

Yes, not sure if the breakdown is 2wd vs 4wd, but I called on a '9X truck being parted out, 1/2 ton 2wd as I recall, and it had the 3500.

Two easy ways to ID it. First, AFAIK, all 3500's had fixed bellhousings. 4500's had the removable ones. Second, look the tranny code up in the glove box. The tranny code (RPO) should be MXX, M being transmission, XX being the model. I found that info online somewhere, much easier to call someone and have them look in the glovebox instead of crawling under the truck /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

yeah, i hoping i would be able to figure out those RPO codes....these trucks arent really old enough that stuff would likely be swapped out yet.

RPO codes to look for are MG5 for the NV3500 & MT8 or MW3 for the NV4500. The NV3500s are aluminum cased with integrated bellhousing (as someone has already posted) & the NV4500s iron cased with aluminum top with separate bellhousing (again, as someone has already posted). Don't know how to post images, so I could email an ~68K line drawing of a NV3500. Email me at [email protected] if you want the image.

Good luck.

Here is the NV3500:

Any truck with 8-lug wheels will have the NV4500 - even with v6. Anything diesel will have the NV4500 - even a 1/2-ton.

Sounds like the towing package gets you a NV4500 as well... although I thought the auto trans was part of the towing package. IIRC, GM recommends towing with the auto trans (but not in OD of course) and claims reduced towing capacity with the manual. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Doesn't Dodge recommend the exact opposite?!

Now if GM can just sell customers that an automatic truck makes more power, and gets better mileage than a manual trans, they could just stop offering them! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Damn people have gotten lazy...
