RE: 1991 GMC Jimmy

Hi - I have been reading the various posts on shocks and there seems to be a lot of variance in preference. I am looking to replace the four shocks that came with my 4 inch Rough Country Lift kit (Installed Nov 2006). In addition to having the 4 inch RC lift, I am running 35 inch tires wrapped in 15X10 Wheels. The truck is a daily driver and not used off road, therefore I am looking for a set of shocks geared toward use on paved road/highway. I know some brands are stiffer then others, and some geared more for off-road, rock crawling. Although so folks have recommended the Rancho 5000, I kinda been thinking about Bilstein shocks.
Just wanted to what others recommend for non-off road use. Thanks

I had Skyjacker hydros on my 81 burb for over five years and they rode great. I just bought more of them to put on my 91 burb. I heard that gas shocks tend to ride a little stiffer, so that is why I stick with hydros.

STREET use, NOT used off-road. What? Ok, I now have no input at all, just giving you a hard time.:D

honestly, Bilstein 5150s are your best bet. You can get them in "light", "medium", or "off road" valving. Therefore, the off road shocks would be stiffer than the other two. If you arent carrying a lot of extra weight and you really dont have to worry about off roading or flexing, then the light valving would be fine for you. I am going with the medium as I dont want to bottom out the shock when Im hunting down on the river and I have to climb over fallen pines and what not. Check ebay for some good pricing. You can expect to pay about $100 a pop, but I hear they are worth it.

yup.. I'm a big Bilstein fan... I should be picking up my 5150's pretty soon...

Bilsteins or stick with Rough Countries and upgrade to the Nitro 9000's. Bet you have the Hydros now.

Hydros, Rancho 5000's, Monroe anything, basic lift shocks, etc = overpriced junk.

Can’t go wrong with the bilstein 5150’s been running them for the last couple of years on a very heavy burb (7600# ) with a 6” lift and 35” mt’s with excellent results on and off road.

I run Bilstein 5150's on my V3500 and have been very happy with them, owned a lot of different shocks and these are the best so far.
