What the...glow plugs not coming on?

Okay, thanks. Don't recall Big Ugly doing that but then again it's a CUCV and might have stuff wrong with it as well...so I have a hard time judging each of these by the other.

Eh...not a big fan of that place since CCATLET left. Pretty unfriendly folks and the way they treated kennyw just for disagreeing with them...:eek1:
Besides, there's a bunch of guys there who know a lot about CUCV's and jack about 73-87 GM trucks. I ask questions about the milspec stuff on Big Ugly there but that's about it anymore.
wow, didnt see any of that, thanks for the heads up. as far as the wait light coming on after starting.. the cucvs do it too, and the light does not come on when they cycle after the engines running. they do cycle though, you can watch the voltmeter jump and hear the click. might be a civy thing or it may mean something, who knows..

after the truck starts, the glow plugs will cycle on and off to help combustion till the temp sensor decides that it's time for the gp's to stay off altogether... i think. my buddy's 6.2 did that alot.

My '83 started doing that a lot while I was driving... so I just unplugged the controller completely and use the manual button instead. I think the newer system has the heat sensor built into the controller right?

my friend also found that when his alternator went out, and his battery power was getting low (because it was nite and he was driving with headlights on), it caused his gp's to cycle. i'm sure that was awesome for his remaining battery power...

Did it again today.

Upper 70's and humid as hell after work. Truck hasn't run since 7:30am so just about 9 hours of sitting. I turned the key there was no gp light. Let it sit and cranked it. Chuggachuggachuggachugga... Tried that several times and nothing but the same chuggachugga. Unplugged the sensor on the front of the engine I think you're talking about. Didn't seem to make a difference. Plugged it back in, tried again after it sat for a minute or two. ChuggachuggachuggachuggaVROOOOOOM and it caught with a big cloud of smoke. Still no gp light though.

Drove it home. Hope it starts in the morning, have a vet appointment at 9am.

Is this the correct sensor?

I have not had the chance to check out my Blazer or the manual, but am thinking the sensor you show in the pic is the correct one....at least based on memory from several years ago I remember a temp sensor located in that area. I found the sensor to be bad and thus not letting the glow plugs come one because the bad sensor signal was equivalent to saying the engine was hot.

You could probably do a quick check with a multi-meter. Unplug the sensor and see what the resistance is between the two terminals when the engine is cold, then warm up the engine and check it again.

Yeah, I need to look at it some more. I'm wondering if it is sensor related because everything sure seems to work correctly...when they work.

Today after work, nearly 100 degrees out, the gp's didn't come on until after I started cranking it. Did the chuggachuggachugga, they kicked on, and then vroom it started.

Yup, what he said. Might cycle a few times until it warms up.

Andrew, if you have a bunch of questions, give me a call(i'll pm my number). We can reitterate them here so everyone can benefit. I am at my parents with the kids now and I am not doinga lot so I should be able to talk you through some stuff.

It kind of sounds that you have a short somehwere. The little sensor on the front replaced what used to be a honking think with a round conector on it with 5 or more wires coming out of it. A version of it was also plugged into the pass head on early models(this guy

). It was a combined temp sensor/glow plug controller. Big ugly should have one of these.

If it is the sensor you have that is bad, I think it only costs about 20 bucks. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.usdieselparts.com/imagesWeb/15575722sm.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.usdieselparts.com/category.cfm%3FCategory%3D1444&usg=__im3vAz-6JuGMtcQF2je3btM0yt4=&h=95&w=100&sz=4&hl=en&start=9&um=1&tbnid=fJznFdxR9wux0M:&tbnh=78&tbnw=82&prev=/images%3Fq%3D6.2%2Bglow%2Bplug%2Bcontroller%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26rls%3Dcom.microsoft:*%26sa%3DN%26um%3D1

It's done it a few times lately but only in the afternoons except for once in the morning on a pretty warm and muggy morning. Usually the light pops on as soon as I start cranking or stop the first time. I'm really wondering if our uncommonly warm weather the last week or so has anything to do with it?

How does the wiring around the GP controller look? Mine were not working right when I got the Sub due to the wiring having been hacked. I redid it(and later replaced it with a new harness) and they worked all the time. My fuseavble links were gone, stuff was electrical taped together, spliced to wires that shouldn't have been together, etc.

Grungy but appears to all be there. As I've said elsewhere there's extra wires running everywhere from one of the prior PO's amateur radio hobby. That's slowly rising on my list of things to fix.

i doubt it. even if it's 80 or 90 around here, if the engine is as cool as it can possibly be in those temps, i still have to cycle my gp's to start the engine. now, if i've been driving around and my truck has sat for an hour or two in those temps, i wouldn't need to cycle them... i have a manual gp set up.

So, I have a fuzzy picture of my GP controller...anything stick out to you guys?:D

It didn't seem this fuzzy on my phone, sorry.

At any rate, I had the air filter housing off today and got this picture and played with it. Everything *seems* solid. The only thing with much wiggle is that central plug with the purple, orange, and green wires going into it. It has space for 5 wires but only four...should their be a 5th wire and should it wiggle?
