What the...glow plugs not coming on?

Went outside this morning and Viola, worked fine. We shall see I guess.

Kenny, do we have a write up or anything on the manual button?

Well, it's a fairly good bet that at least once a day I'll have to pop the hood and deal with this.

I have it down to a science - it's the main bundle of wires that goes to the controller. I just wiggle that wire bundle and whalla, the gp light comes right on as soon as I turn the key.

Must be something either with the connector or the wires. Short in the wires as they come up to the connector perhaps?
Anybody know if GM sells this group of wires and connector?

You think it's the pins?

Where would I get the pins?

You think it's the pins? Where would I get the pins?

As long as the plastic clip is not broken, the pins are what make the connection between the wire and the controller. Any good autoparts store or GM parts department can get them.

What do you think has happened? Bent, worn, etc? I don't remember what they looked like when I replaced the controller in August but I didn't really pay them much attention.

What do I ask for? Replacement pins for a wiring harness plug?

When I got my donor 6.2 the first thing I did was to remove the glow plug controller and toss it in the circular receptacle. Wired a switch to a Ford starter solenoid and used that to light the plugs. If the engine has been at operating temp in the previous few hours I can usually just hit the key and it lights. Otherwise I will hit the glows for maybe 3 seconds, and it always starts. If the engine is cold but it is warm outside I will glow for maybe 5 seconds and she lights instantly. If it's cold I will give it 10 seconds (I have AC60G plugs) and it always fires right up.

I hesitate to do that since well, the thing works perfectly WHEN IT WORKS.

It was like this started and has continued since. I also just spent $100 on the controller in August. If I can fix it I'd rather do that honestly. If not then I'll be on here bugging you guys about wiring up that relay. I'm iffy with diesel stuff and bad with electrical.

kennyw's right, it's gotta be the pins and/or connector. This morning I just barely nudged it and the gp light came right on.

NAPA has no clue what I'm looking for other than that the connector is not something they could get.

The local Chevy dealership can get me a whole replacement splice in connector but I'd have to bring them mine so they could identify and order it. Obviously that isn't happening unless they will come out and look at it in the truck. Have to see.

Anybody have one of these kicking around or know part numbers of what I actually need order from GM or a parts store?

Next time I go to the JY I will see if I can find one for you and I will cut it off and send it your way.

Thanks man but hold the thought.

I forgot to post but guess what I found last week while randomly perusing Rock-Auto.com? Yep, they had it for like $33.

Looks right. Going to try and get it on this weekend. The wires don't match color wise but I figure I'll just go left to right.

Okay...3 weeks later it's on. Clipped the wires about 6" back from the connector and fitted the new connector and wires in place.

I'm not calling it victory yet but I've started the truck about 5-6 times or so since we did this early this afternoon and the light comes right on as it should. None of the "have to bump it over first", wiggle the wires, or any of that BS. If it works for a few days like it has been this afternoon I'm calling it victory.

Yep. Not bad for about $45.

Random but I used the NAPA screw together wire connectors after someone on here recommended them. I likes.

It was the Gov'ts money then. THey gave me $5K a month. I hardly ever used it all, but sometimes the little knick knacks were nice to have.

So uhm, it's been 4 days and it works perfectly so far.:thumb:
