on the crapper...
I am gonna go look at a Chevy D60 front next weekend (open, w/ 4.10s). It is complete including brakes and tie-rod. I probly wont have a lot of time to look at it before I make a decision. What should I check to make sure it is in good condition? I will be re-gearing and putting in a master R&P install kit, so the condition of those parts doesn't matter as much.

I don't expect that there will be any issues with it, but I'd hate to miss something important before I drop a big chunk of change for it.

just make sure it's complete. shake/spin the wheel bearings, axle shafts, and pinion. as long as there isn't excessive play, or any at all it should be fine. your gonna regear but you don't want the main housing to be shot from worn out bearings. check the lock out hubs for ease of turning and make sure they lock the shafts.

i'd pop the diff cover off anyway, you never know if water/mud has gotten in there until you check, my 60 had about 1 cup of water in it that i didnt find out about until i tear down, and as a result rust on the carrier/gears/bearings

Make sure the pinion isn't loose, the biggest thing is that the housing itself is good. Execsive play in the diff may suggest a spun race (not that big of a deal) and like has been said try to pop the cover to make sure everything is good

Just make sure everything more or less is tight. I don't know about Chevy axles but I know some Dodges came with external hubs ( the hubs bolt on ) its expensive to change to internal hubs so make sure it has internal hubs

:doah:Do'h On :doah:

nOOb question:

What is the difference between internal and external hubs?

:doah:Do'h Off :doah:

He says it has manual lockouts.

its easy to tell internal hubs have no bolts holding them on to the rest of the axle, external hubs have several bolts holding them on I will see if I can find some pics

External?

External hubs fail easier than internal hubs.

I've heard some people say its because the external hub bolts loosen easily but I don't have any direct experience with external hubs. Supposedly if the bolts are kept tight they are similar in strength.

Internal hubs have a much better selection of stock and aftermarket options too.

Ok I got it now.

External = flange on the back bolted the axle (less desireable)

Internal = no flange on the back (more desireable)

Do you have to change the outer shaft to swap types?

Actually, I'm looking at one north of here. Wrong way.

I saw you were parting out your Crew Cab, are you still interested in the front clip off my '89?

I change my mind more than my drawers. I think it's sold, just waiting for it to be picked up. Just got tired of looking at it & thinking about all I was never gonna do to it. Still interested in the clip though.

Wildmanaaron was looking at buying just the drivers door when I part it out, now he wants to know what I would like for the whole truck minus the trans (which I need for my '91).

I haven't decided what to do yet. I need to come up with a number that I would let it go for, but need to factor in what I think I could get for the parts, minus that hassle of keeping it in my garage and parting it out, and also consider the parts I could take a spares/upgrades for the '91.

My brain hurts now, time for a nap.

I'll probly start a new thread to see what people think the truck minus trans is worth compared to what the parts are worth.

I am still interested in your hydroboost setup and I still have those warn premium hubs.

Let him have the clip w/the truck then. I'd just hoard it back for my private inventory. Consider the hubs taken.

Got the D60 today. Everything seemed nice and tight. Hubs worked good. Didn't pull the cover 'cause it was sleeting, I was way late and didn't want to BamBamBlazer's family to have to wait at the truck stop we met at any more, and I couldn't really get it to balance on the pinion yoke so I could pull the cover without making a mess of the back of their truck.

According to BillaVista's BOM decoder it is a '82-'87 K30 axle with the big 35 spline inners and a 4.10 diff. Also has Superwinch INTERNAL hubs, a very beefy tie rod and crossover reverse high steer arms. Pics as soon as we get daylight and no rain at the same time.

Thanks for all your help guys. And thanks BamBamBlazer!
