What to look for when buying a D60 Front

Got the D60 today. Everything seemed nice and tight. Hubs worked good. Didn't pull the cover 'cause it was sleeting, I was way late and didn't want to BamBamBlazer's family to have to wait at the truck stop we met at any more, and I couldn't really get it to balance on the pinion yoke so I could pull the cover without making a mess of the back of their truck.

According to BillaVista's BOM decoder it is a '82-'87 K30 axle with the big 35 spline inners and a 4.10 diff. Also has Superwinch INTERNAL hubs, a very beefy tie rod and crossover reverse high steer arms. Pics as soon as we get daylight and no rain at the same time.

Thanks for all your help guys. And thanks BamBamBlazer!
all chevy 60's should have 35 spline inners

According to BillaVista (who has been wrong B4) the '77-'78 Chevy D60s are 30 spline.

That is incorrect. ALL GM D60 front axles are 35 splines on the inner shafts and 30 spline on the stub shafts. The only difference is neck down vs/ non-neck down axleshafts and that is it.

Ok Billa, that is your third strike, your benched.

Is '77-'78 the neck down inners and '79 up the non-neckdown? BillaVista claims that as well.

I was looking back at the BillaVista D60 article on pirate to make sure I wasn't corn-fused. In the text he does say all chevy D60 inners are 35 spline, but in his BOM lookup table he says the '78 and earlier ones have 30 spline inners. I get the feeling he just copied and pasted a bunch of stuff together for that article without really reading it.

probably.

How much did you pay for it if you don't mind me asking. Just trying to get a good range to save up for. And know if I find a deal or getting ripped off.

I think people usually ask about $1000 for them. I happened to find mine for $700. It also depends on the condition, etc. The best deals seem to be when people find somebody who is trying to get rid of a non-running K30 and they pick up the whole truck for cheap.

by me you can get a decent one for 800, some for 1000 and then i can find a few that need a little work for as little as 400.

More pics in my build blog now.

I think mine would fall in the needs a little work category. It's not too bad, but I'll prolly go through and replace all the bearings, rebuild the kingpins, replace the calipers and rotors, clean it up and paint it etc. I could probly get by with some of that stuff, but it will be much easier to work on before I throw it under the front of the truck and I'm sure it will need all that stuff sooner or later. It is 23 years old after all.
