This originally came out of my '79 Chevy 4x4's 12 bolt axle. I took this out, put an Eaton in it, then sold it, then put in a 14bff with a locker...and I still have this thing laying around. My wife's '69 C10 has an open diff. 12 bolt in the rear and I am wondering if this would help the 1-tire-fryer at all.

So it would not be worth putting this in her C10 street truck with a 383 stroker? I need to make this thing hook up (rather than melt the right tire)...but don't have a lot of extra cash since I just did the swap.

They're good in a stock truck IMO, anything more than that and they don't hold up well.

IMO, their intent was to help in things like mud. I wouldn't recommend swapping one into a truck with some power that was going to see burnouts and such.
 
I have seen them hold up pretty good in a street application. It seems the 12 b holds up way better than the 10 b ones so I say put it in. If you don't have the money for anything else.

be aware of how it works. it's not a limited slip, its a locker, but unlike a detroit, it requires one axleshaft to spin faster than the other to make it operate. however they do work.
inspect it for wear as best you can. if it looks good then i say put it in. give it a whirl if you can do it properly yourself. when they work as designed, they dont need much speed from the spinning tire to engage the other axle, but if its worn, it may take too much wheel speed to make it lock. thats when it will go BOOOOMMM.
 
With a lunchbox locker though, is there a greater fear of snapping an axle or breaking a c-clip? This truck is mainly a show truck driven on the street that might see the occasional tire squeal.
 
I'd bet less chance of that happening, than launching that gov bomb.
 
Yeah, I have a Detroit EZ Locker in my 14bff and a LockRight in my Dana 60...but those are stout axles and full floating. This 12 bolt could break easier is my thought.
 
When my Blazer was still sitting on 1/2 ton axles, I ran a lunch box in my 12b...

Never had a problem... And it saw plenty of trail and street use...
