What way to mount a trans cooler?

Your transmission will likely go out in short order if coolant migrated into it via the defective cooler in the radiator..the clutch packs dont like anti-freeze,nor do bearings and O-rings..
Ha! Good to know.

Might have to add a ounce of brake fluid to the trans. :haha:

You never told me that was why it went out.

Well it was well abused, but I'm sure the ending factor was the contamination of oil.

Although the 355 that came outta the truck now has rust proofed coolant passages lol

I just dug this up in some old stack of papers I had:

I am going to have to change the mounting on my 'tub & fin' trans cooler to the fittings on top. Right now my cooler is mounted in the "NO GO" position. A previous owner may have mounted it the wrong way, but that is the way it was mounted on my truck when I bought it.

Tube and fin may be less critical on install. The pressure side will push the fluid through the tubes from input to exit. With the plate style cooler, the fluid will never be forced through the top part of the cooler - you will end up with an air pocket in the top.

I like to add an external trans fliter to mine. Get aN oil filter mount for an external engine oil filter and get the one that takes a Chevy filter...not the ford. Then, use the same filter that your truck uses...I use the 2 qt HD filter. In Fram it is ph...followed by the best axle ratio for a pu (373).

It sounds like you need a new rad.

So, I'd plumb it radiator, filter, then external cooler. If you use the 2 qt filter, and mount it it a breeze, you could eliminate the additional cooler.

This is the truck...currently buried in snow parked behind the barn in the row of death.
It needs a ton of other work before we spend any money on a new rad.
Just getting bypassed for now.

Lots of great ideas and suggestions in here though.
Thanks guys!

Mine is mounted with the fittings down. Have not had an issue with the trans fluid not cooling as the B&M info says.

I know @76zimmer has his mounted like that too...like he said that is how GM has it on his 99. Dave is a fussy guy his builds are very well put together!
And yes all the GM coolers have the fittings pointing down.

My factory engine oil cooler was mounted with the fittings facing down as well. However I mounted my trans cooler facing up.
