What would you do if you had $2,000

Erik, erik, erik,

I have seen your Jimmy, so I've got plenty of suggestions. As for legal, forget it. You're not going to be legal with your 8" suspension lift and 36" tires. IN fact you're hardly legal now. If you wish to be legal, I can help you make that happen with 44" tires if you wish. You'll even like how it looks when it's over.

If I were you:
37" BFG KMs. For your use, BFGs like mine are perfect. They're livable on the road, and they work very well. Consider Swamper SSRs or TSL Radials as well. All will work well.

You're going to need new rims anyway. I love your stock aluminum wheels, but they're only 8" wide. Time to ditch those. If you're like me and you like the black steel wheels, that saves cash, and looks good. If not, buy some black ones and I'll trade you my Chrome ones.

Since my stuff's 8 lug, that means a 14 bolt FF and front axle swap. I know where you can get the pair with 4.56s right now for $300. I just found out today about those. They'll need brakes, so add a little cash in there for that. Add a new pair of axle u-joints and wheel bearings and races for it.

That leaves some money to play with. A CV rear shaft would be nice.

A Detroit in the rear would also be nice. I know a guy that can hook you up. His shop is in Batavia, he's a professional, and he can install it for you.

Now you've got 37s, new rims, Detroit, 4.56s, driveshafts, a 14FF and D44, and an awful lot of capability.

Your exhaust is fine. If you want to do the camshaft, I can help you do that too.

We're both young and into 4x4s. Only difference is that I've been in your shoes before. If you let me help you like I told you in August, you'll save a lot of cash and believe me, your truck will be everything you want it to be.

I would buy a bad @ss fuel injection setup for the carb'd 454 under my hood! But maybe you would want to start on the 454 first!!!

If you plan on staying with 36s or 37s I would do a 6 lug 14 bolt SF. This would keep you from having to buy new rims, and would be alot stronger than your 10 bolt. Put a detroit locker in the rear, and a lockrite for the front. Then put a tranny cooler on it. I would also regear it if you have anything less than 3.73s. I would do 4.56s if you have to change gears. I just did them with my 35s on the Jimmy and its a perfect combo.

I've got under 3K into my truck including initial purchase price. Granted, she's not on the road yet, but it's a case study to what you can do with a little patience and by scouting for good deals. Here's what I did so far:

Bought original truck....$431
New Used fender....$20
Used battery.....$15
Rebuilt starter....$40
Tuff country 4" lift...$240
3/4 ton axles, 36" swamps on rims, and 2.5" TC lift...$700
Sold 2.5" TC lift...-$100
Rear detroit locker (wish i had saved cash and just welded it)...$350
Shadetree axle setup...$200
Rear axle rebuild kit...$100
Steering stabilizer...$10 (blem from napa)
wheel cylinders, brake pads, rotors turned, shoes...$120
Lug nuts...$20
Bed bob...FREE
Roll cage...$180 materials
Shocks (Long Travel Pro comps)...$130
Bought parts truck...$400
Parted out that truck...-$800
New ujoints...$60
Fuel Cell...$200
Tool Box...$20
Yoke Straps...$20
Interstate battery...$125
Steering box brace...Got in trade on unneeded parts

= 2500 and probably a couple hundred in little stuff I'm just not thinking of right now...

What do I have left? Need some sunpro gauges, would like new 36x13x16 TSLs, and a TBI or propane setup. Got most of the stuff rounded up for OBA. It's all about buying used, finding good deals, and being in the right place at the right time!!!

If I had $2k, i'd pay it on the citibank as far as it would go. I'm sitting at around $10k in my truck right now, and I still haven't done the winch, bumpers, rollcage, 60 yet. With some good money managing, you can stretch $2k, but unless you are an honest to god horsetrader, you may not get REAL far. This chit can be EXPENSIVE!

1 Word.... Rockwells....

actually, I don't think I'd put in the rockwell 2 1/2 ton axles yet... first things first, I personaly would cut the roof off of my suburban, weld in a massive cage, and then commission a soft top for it. ( we're talking FULL convertable here) drop dana 60 out front, lockers, doubler, fit some vortech heads on my 454.... ok, so thats probably a little more then 2000 dollars worth of work, but yanno....

My truck isn't ugly, you have a skewed sense of beauty

Hey Brandy... First off if your truck doesn't need anything but a Maglight and you have 2G's burning a whole in your pocket I gotta see this rig

Secondly do you really need to beef up a new Duramax? Thought those were pretty dang cool already

Man... if Erik isn't interested in those 4.56 axles I sure would be interested in making the trek to get them.

Erik.. I would definetly jump on them if I was you.

My friend told me about them, they're sitting in about the best junkyard around here. I would love to have them too. I was thinking of buying them.

He said that he wasn't positive that they're 4.56s, but he thinks so. I know where you can get three sets of 3/4 ton 4.10s for $300 a pair too...those are confirmed. I'll have to double check the 4.56s before you come all the way out here.

You guys should see Erik's Jimmy. It's awesome. He bought it, and it looks like the first owner got in over his head with the 8" suspension. The body's perfect, the engine runs good, and it is absolutely beautiful inside. All Erik needs is some know-how to help him finish the project that someone started a long time ago. I helped him change his wheel bearings out and showed him how to change a front brake caliper. He really is eager to learn. I helped him out as best I can.

Erik came down to my house in August for the 4x4 show and met all my friends. We had a blast and he even entered his truck in the mud bogs. With all-terrain tires he wasn't exactly competition material, but he did make it all the way through as one of the last trucks in the class.

All my friends thought he was cool too. They've been asking about him and when he's coming back down. I haven't heard much from him since August, but I'm sure he'll be down for the frame up on my truck next summer to hang out, drink a few beers, and enjoy some good old Chevy 4x4s.

I even took him to one of the milder 4 wheeling spots around here to play. He hasn't seen the deep stuff yet. If he really gets some tires, gears, and a locker in the rear, he can really show my friends with 38-44" tires that smaller trucks are plenty capable too!

I think after looking at all the posts. I would put the 2 grand in the stock market. I would invest it in auto parts and junk yards.

Smartass. I'm sure I'll like the detroit just fine, just kinda wish I had that $350 to put into something else, like tires or a winch.

Get 3/4 ton axels with 5.13 gears. With the lower gears your engine will not need as much power to turn over those 36" tires. Of course your engine will be reving 4000rpm at 70mph but getting to 70mph will be a whiplash experience.

Depends how you look at it...

When I was on my way into the 4x4 show, some idiot in a Dodge pickup was spinning all four of his tires trying to get in. He was pulling a trailer queen/trailer trash POS behind him to compete with.

After I hooked up the chain and yanked that sorry excuse for a 4x4 (or was it the driver) into the pits, mysteriously, one of the staff members said, "Hey, drink beer?" and handed me a Bud Light through my driver's window and off into the pits I was.

The cops there watched me drink all weekend and never said a word about it...hell, Erik went and bought a case at the local store!

And, when I am at home, working for a long time on an old Chevy 4x4, it just won't get done without at least a few cold ones.

At home in the garage? Sure. On the trail? Sure, after all of us bury our trucks in the mud and ride the quads back to the campsite!!
