The H1 and military hummers?

As far as daily driveability,

Lotta people run em because they do fairly well on road, wear really well because they are so hard.

usefulness,

They work ok

strength
Weak sidewalls

wheelability

Bettter than an A/T less than a M/T

repair,

aftermarket support
mmmm

Or if you were talking about the double beadlocks?

They weigh a ton
lots of aftermarket
work AWESOME with an insert
Super strong
metal so you can repair em, allthough with rock rings they are pretty indestructable

Some people have a hard time balancing with em since they are so heavy and there is the unknown factor of how true they were recentered.

Well I could be wrong, but it looks like he's talking about the H1 not the H1 wheels or tires.
If that is the case:
they are wide, but I wouldn't mind driving one.
The ride is good, mileage is comparable to a GM pickup, repairs are a little more involved but not too much for most CK5ers, and I believe the aftermarket does have some support for them, not that they need much.
:dunno:

I think he means the whole vehicle. Not the tires

That was my third guess but you guys beat me to it :haha:

are they worth the GAZILLION dollar investment?

they come with 37" tires stock I believe (correct me if im wrong)

Portable box gear reduction hub assemblies, cage type undercarriage

and a cool looking body

but concerned they are IFS/IRS and again if they are worth investing in

or should i look toward an M1 Abrams tank with what they cost

I wish they had portable box gear reduction, but they do have portal gear reduction hubs :pimp:
The setup on the H1 is pretty much good as is, and with the clearance from the portals and the size of the 37" tires, they are quite capable off road for the things I like to do.
In th epower department, the engine could use some help but it's a standard GM diesel so plenty support there, but if your wheeling is in tight trails, the H1 is much wider than a typical pickup.
Now for the price, I have seen some used ones go for under $20k, I think that is good enough for me but I would never pay the price tag of $110k new.

I am so indecisive with the rig I want its driving me nuts

Ive seen H1 hummers with 6-8 lifts and 44" tires and they look badass and the box style is just cool all around

but the IFS/IRS bothers me

I LOVE the blazer, however here is Mass its hard to put large lifts and tires and all the other goodies on without failing inspection or getting pulled over (and cutting fenders is frowned upon on inspections)

I like the K20/K30 because they already have larger running gear and large lift and tire capability with a K30 (legally if its over 10k gvw)

Cost is a factor But like the hummer you get reduction gears, an Allison Transmission, 37" tires, a diesel, and cool body style...etc, it just costs my sons college fund and then some but you get good stuff

IDK some kick me in the right direction with their steel toe boots

Ive even contempleted an 80's toyota with the 22R or 22RE motor, solid axles, gear transfercase and leaf springs, but they feel like a dinky tin can

I don't know what bothers you with the IRS and IFS, they are strong enough and they have great clearance. Now it depends what kind of wheeling you want to do, it might be an advantage, or a hindrance.
Contrary to popular belief, they do good on rock crawling without flexing too much, they do flex better than an IFS GM truck.
They are wide as I mnetionned before so tight trails are a no go.
But if you are looking for a go anywhere off road vehicle they are not bad.
I would sell most of what I have to get one, it fits my needs perfectly.

I have never ben a real fan of IFS/IRS..too many moving parts and seem real soft maybe H1 setups are different, dont get much of a chance to get up close to them.(hummers)

I havent been wheeling in years sadly, my current truck (even though it is 4wd) wouldnt get far in the woods

Basically mud and woods wheeling, not much of a rock fan. The truck in my avaatar was destroyed on me, and with it my passion...so kinda getting back into it again

Dont know what path to go, dont want a tube buggy..I want it street legal (for the most part.. not being able to drive it is useless to me)

With that kind of wheeling unless the trees are really tight, you wouldn't regret having the H1.
Have you seen any for sale?
What range are you seing, and are they civilian or ex military vehicles?

Most are blown up ex military or de-commisioned ( i live by a reserve base)

and if your lucky to find a civilian version... but no matter what even one blown to hell, missing doors and most likely hit with an IED is anywhere between $4k-$10k

I have wheeled everything you can imagine.2 wheels to 4 wheels. I have raced desert on bikes and baja in class 5 buggy's. That said we did some extreme things in h1 alphas when I served and short of a few aftermarket hop ups I would consider racing stock in baja. And I believe there was a team that did like 10 years ago.

After that not for tree wheeling due to width and seats are to tight due to where trans and transfer case ride. Incredible amount of clearance when there are no pumpkins to drag.

what do they run for transfercases? 205's? Do they have lockers? and lift kits?

A guy in my club has a civy H1. I've seen him wheel it pretty hard and attempt some rock crawling with it. It's major downfalls are it's size for New England trails and cost of repairs, even if you do your own work. The specialized parts market for those things is expensive. They have open diffs too which doesn't help when you get that loooooong flat belly high centered. The stock 37s are barely 35s, as has been said on this site many many times. You will get VERY good at toggling between R and D to make a simple tight turn. The body doesn't hold up to trees any better than anything else either.

This leads me to ask.... Why do you need a truck that tall? Is 4" and 35s not enough? Seems like overkill for what you want to do.
