What ya think of...

what do they run for transfercases? 205's? Do they have lockers? and lift kits?

I believe it is an np242, a full time unit. A local guy has one, and I remember hearing the outrageous amount it was to replace it. I think they are overrated, but I wouldnt turn down an opportunity to drive one. Especially an alpha.

While 33" and 35" tire have worked well in the pass and have used both on different trucsk.. The 38" tires i had were the best tires i had ever owned..

NP242 seems awful light duty. as my auto-trac whines from barely normal use.

I also perfer bigger lift and tires, because there are mud holes that swallow 35" tired lift jeeps and toyotas. and they cant get over the boulders they put in front of trail heads

I wouldnt worry too much about the IFS/IRS. Because of the portal axles, alot of strain is taken off of the drive componants. The gear reduction at the hub makes them alot tougher and easier on the rest of the drivetrain.

Still,

the question remains, Is it worth the investment with all the facts considered over buying another trucks (ie: K5 or K20/30 etc)

Budget is: over time build..is there a budget? yes

Could I buy port box outers for a Dana 60 and rear axle if I wanted too.. sure..I see them for about $3000 a set

sooo.....:dunno:

but i will say this, it would be cool to have reactive armor plating on a rig

I would not buy one for wheeling.

I have wheeled in one, they suck in the snow, they suck in the mud, they suck on any trail that is a trail through something. No matter who you follow in one, you are making your own trail. They are to wide and to heavy.

You would be miles ahead buying a nice Blazer or k10,20,30 and putting the money into it.

make a list of what you want in a truck and what you want to do with it and go from there. Look at Wade's truck full on desert pre-runner I think he may have 37's takes it rock crawling at BB, but yet could do 100 mph in the desert and go grocery shopping, probably at the same time. :D

Because of the portals, it doesn't need some major t-case. But stuff does break. The last time I saw the H1 out wheeling he twisted his driveshaft like a twizzler.

An H1 won't get over those boulders either. And on that same note, if there is boulders in front of a trailhead, it's not a trailhead. Probably private property and blocked off because people aren't supposed to be going in there. Just sayin.

4 wheeling is illegal in massachusetts.. theyve blocked off pretty much everywhere. unless its private property

So you kinda have to go over the 3ft rocks to get in...

now what about them mogs'..

is you get the unimog gear reduction outters for a dana 60 and or rear axle...is that considered lift?

what kind of gearing setup in the transfercase or transmission or rear end?

Not true. Trespassing is illegal. Yes, some of the land we wheel is private property with permission from the landowner(s) of said property. There are trails/wheeling areas that are public access and open to wheel. MaBell and Old Florida Rd are open to the public. Neither of which are mud pits or casual jaunts through the woods though. There are Class 6 roads up in NH that are open to the public also. But that's NH not Mass.

Well all of the trails, snowmobile, quading, and trucks around my area are shut down and are illegal and the EPA will ticket and tow your vehicle to the impound

unless its private property or a club with approval...good luck if you get caught

So, you need a tall truck to get over the boulders and gain access to the illegal wheeling trails. Yet you are aware of the consequences. :dunno: This totally contradicts the time, effort and expense to build a truck within the confines of the law only to do something illegal with it.

Why not join a club and wheel legally? Mass Mudders may be along the lines of the type of wheeling you are looking for.

Mass mudders are no where near me....

the only Wheeling groups I know of is a Jeep club and there so into themselves they dont want anything but Jeeps.

I can tell you this that if the EPA and police can get over there own rocks, I applaud them to ticket me.

And idk if you know the laws or not, you can not drive a truck on Massachusetts soil thats modified for wheeling or lifted more then 4"..Unless you know someone doing inspections or the police personally you will get pulled over if it even looks suspiciously like you been wheeling.. maybe out where you are its ok, but where i am it is extremely frowned upon...So the word "LEGAL" isnt something you hear with trucks around where i am..

Maybe if you had a prius on 35" tires with the person smoking weed they might be ok.

and theres worse people then me breaking the law hurting our sport

but im not going to fight about it. Cause its not worth it.

HAHAHA! You got that right!

I wasn't trying to come down on you. You just had my curiosity on full boar. Sorry if I came off as a dick.

Its cool,

But seriously I bet if you drove a prius on 35" tires, had illegals in the back (if you could fit them) and smoking weed..no one would ever pull you over

But if you had even the slightest mod on your truck, its instant ticket lol

oh im all for wheeling legally, dont get me wrong and there are a few places from what i hear, but dont know if there legal or not

I got to look at the drive train and transfer case of an H1 in Moab once.......

It was upside down on a trail mind you.......:eek1:

I figure if someone has driven where I am going before me, and I am not damaging the environment(that anyone can tell) I am okay to talk myself out of a ticket. That said I do not go anywhere I think is private property. I basically stick to power lines in mass. I usually find there is someone who has already created a path around those big rocks.

Class 5 roads and legal town trails in Southern VT have been where its at for me lately, but I have a place to stay up in Londonderry. I download town maps online that list all the roads and trails and go from there. Sometimes its just a nice scenic dirt road and other roads are a lot of fun with down trees and mud holes and streams. Even on those roads I can barely squish my blazer through the new growth, I don't think you couldn't take a hummer in half of the places I have been without a chainsaw.

Your right, hummers just arent very good around here for anytime of off highway/ off-road driving..even though they serve their purpose. I think they are more for the desert and California Mall crawlers.. Id be surprised if it fit (width wise) in my driveway
