thinking of ditching the top and tailgate on my k5 and using a truck tailgate, but whats involved in the swap? anyone got some pics?

pretty shure the latching system is different to but that would be cool, and lighter

of course i think of this after buying an 84 k5 just for the tailgate.

I have one on mine. Just grab a tailgate, the lower mounts, the upper latches, and the limiting straps. Just take off your K5 stuff and bolt it all on. All the right holes are there and they go on in about 15 minutes.

sweetness i thought it might be easy god bless GM /forums/images/graemlins/bow.gif

i've never been much of a gm guy after my wifes berreta was a pile, but damn do they think ahead... gm truck stuff rules. thanks for the info.

It doesn't get much simpler than this, a very simple bolt on, just get the hardware off the donor p/u.

Yep that's it. I just did this mod last week. Probably gnna save yourself at least 50 lbs by ditching the factory tailgate.

Now I gotta come up with something to fill the gaping hole when the hard top is on... at least untill I get a soft top.

About a year ago someone did the tailgate swap and also swapped in the hinge window portion of a pickup cap.

Where did that post go?

Damn that's sweet. Now if I only had the rear pillars left on my truck to attach it too... /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif /forums/images/graemlins/hack.gif /forums/images/graemlins/weld.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grind.gif

How well does it line up while closed? I've been thinking about just taking the glass & regulator out of mine. /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif

they line up fine and look like they were supposed to be there! I used to have a pic of mine in my gallery, but it is gone now... /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif

Do you guys plan on using a soft-top with your truck tailgates and if so how do you seal the tailgates??

Now somebody asks the important question, how do you seal it. I tried the truck 'gate several years ago and went back to a stripped K5 'gate because of the seals. I got tired of sucking exhaust into the cab through the truck gate's cracks. I know you can weatherstrip it but it was just as easy to take the window and motor out of the k5 'gate and call it good.

I plan on weather-stripping it. I like the truck-style tailgate due to the easy removal... that and I replaced my tail pan (or what was left of it) w/ 3x3 steel square tube and don't wanna go through the pain of lining up hinges. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Stripped K5 gate is still heavier than a truck gate though considerably lighter than a loaded K5 gate.

Since my rig will never have the top back on sealing isn't really an issue for me. Eventually I may have a simple canvas top made for winter rides but I decided it will be less headaches to just weather proof the interior and have an open back.
