well, i figured out what my hard start problem has been for the last coupla weeks. :p: only 3 GP's workin!! :haha:

Worst ever was only 4 workin. My '83 is on 7 right now. I broke the spade off one GP, gonna crimp a bullet connector on the wire for that one this weekend...

One winter I got sick of hard starts, disconected the batt wire from the solinoid and used either the rest of the winter.

Ether? Not that again!

Why not just use gas? I wonder what other highly volatile fuels you could use? Butane? Some camp stove fuel? Nitros?

Lots of stuff to try and blow your engine, and possibly yourself, up with:haha:

Starting fluid+glow plugs= problems I know I know. but if the glow plugs are not used it dont hurt anything. I change over to manual push button to control the GP's. Also I only use a TINY squirt to start anything, so little of an amount in fact I still have half of that can from that winter. (3 years)

Your comment does remind me of a time I was younger. It was winter and my friend was trying to start his snowmobile. He sprayed ALOT into the air intake, gave the rope a tug and BOOM under the hood. It blew the whole cylender sleve off the crank case.

Anyway I appresiate your concern non-the-less. I still use it to start the CC because for some reason I thought it was wise to disconect the GP system and I dont start that truck but maybe 1-2 times a month.

The problem is Starting Fluid (ether) used on a diesel. It's the same reason you don't use gas, but more so. Whether you use, or have working, glow plugs it's still chancy. WD-40 is excellent as a starting fluid for a diesel.

It's your vehicle so do what you want but others should know that playing on the freeway is not a good idea.:doah:

I never herd of using WD-40. Is there any draw backs or negitive effects?
I will admit the one thing I dont like about ether is the instant 1500rpm start with NO oil pressure. Does WD-40 do that?

People are quick to protest ether, but as far as my own experiances your the ONLY person to sugest an alternitive. I dont use WD-40 though (for intended purposes or otherwize) I usualy use PB blaster or justice bros penitrating oil. Just a brand prefrence thing, but do they work as well?

That's exactly the point. WD-40 is not as volatile as starting fluid but it has a lower flash point than diesel. I suppose any petroleum based light lubricant would work and WD-40 was picked because it is readily available but I haven't heard of any other brands. I've read about people using WD-40 in several places. Personally I've only tested it twice when I had several bad glow plugs and I used it once to get home and then once in the driveway right before I put in new plugs. Others have used it in very cold conditions.

You don't use enough of it to do any real harm to the engine. It's not like you are using it as a diesel additve:doah:

Edited to add: end of hi-jack;)

It was about 35 this morning and I got mine to fire off without any glow plugs DAMN CONTROLLER.

Tryed to do it again tonight and about torched my starter.

you can jump the controller if you need to. just put the power directly from the battery to the orange gp wires. ;)

Actually it has power, he needs to ground the blue wire.:D
When my controler on the 82 van I had was broken (literally) I used to tilt it and the right contact would grond on the housing and the glow plugs would work. It was a van and the guy I bought it from cut out a 4"x4" window in the engine cover so he could reach it from the driver seat and be able to start it.
It worked for me until I scrapped it.

Yeah, on the controller, I have a black, two red/purpleish ones, and a yellow i think. Theres a light blue wire with a Green in a two pronged plug clear over by the master cyclinder
